Hello all,

i have finally aquired the equipment ive been wanting to put together for a while now. I have a Marantz 2235b receiver with a 2440 quadradial amp. I have a pair of bose 601 series 2 speaker in the front, and i would like to run a bose am-5 passive subwoofer connected with two zenith circle of sound speakers for the rear discrete through the 2440. you guys would be amazed at how well the circle of sound inconjunction with the passive sub sound! its so clean and warm through the 2235b that i just want to throw out all my present day equipment. Anyway, i'm a little confused about the hookup/passthrough of the 2440 quadradial amp. I dont want to hook up anything incorrect, and burn anything up. Im sure this question has popped up, but i was unable to find the info i was looking for. if anybody can describe quite simply the connection between the 2235b and the 2440, i would be really happy. thank you all for keeping this wonderful and classic equipment alive!

Welcome to AudioKarma. You certainly have some nice Marantz equipment. Thanks to Dingman, I have corrected my hook up description. To hook up your 2440 to your 2235b:

1. hook up one pair of standard RCA terminated interconnects between the 2235b TAPE MONITOR OUTPUT and the MATRIX INPUT on the back of your 2440.

2. Hook up one pair of standard RCA terminated interconnects between the 2235b TAPE MONITOR INPUT and the FRONT OUTPUT on the back of your 2440.

3. The front Left and Right speakers are connected to the 2235b. The surround (or rear) Left and Right speakers are connected to the 2440.

4. On your 2235b switch the Tape Monitor to the on position. The 2440 can now be used to control the volume for all four speakers using the MASTER VOLUME. Be sure to turn up the volume on the 2235b to achieve the initial balance.

This should get you started. If you need more help, just holler.

oh, i dont have any of the sq encoders, …l
Yet.

TCdriver,

thank you so much for the help. I made the connections, but for whatever reason i still have to control the front and rear volumes independently -- this is no big deal, as i am constantly fiddling with the controls anyway! the 2440 doesnt seem to have much of a following, but i am pretty impressed with the vari matrix dimension control. You get a pleasant delay/echo effect, and can remove virtually all of the voice from the rear channels. im amazed at the amount of power this thing puts out for only being twenty watts per channel.
thanks again for the help - much appreciated!

Hi.
Hooking up a 2240 to a 2270, both aquired last year.

The above instructions ARE correct.

Here is the correct connection details, taken directly from the manual.

Receiver tape OUT goes to 2440 MATRIX IN
Receiver tape IN goes to 2440 FRONT OUT

Rear speakers then wire up to MAIN speaker terminals on the 2440.
EDIT- just finished setup, even after connecting correctly, I still had trouble. Thought my unit was faulty.
But it works great, I had missed a step on what I'll call calibration.
Make SURE the MODE knob is on Vari-matrix. That's what messed me up.
Calibration is easy~ All Power Off
Receiver on tape mon, volume at 12 o'clock. Set source to some Stereo input, FM Stereo is fine.
2440 mode set to Vari-matrix. Volume at minimum. Everything else at mid-way. Remote control knob at Local, Main speakers ON and remote speakers Off.
Power both units on, increase 2440 Master Volume to some level where you can hear the media.
Adjust receiver volume to desired front/rear level.
Then, only use 2440 master volume.
My personal setup is whacked, causing me to put my 2270 volume at about 75%, and still my rear speakers were too loud. This is due to my rears being super efficient Klipsch, while the front are decidedly not efficient Wharfedale W60's.
I have been able to balance the F/R though, with the Front/Rear slider on the 2440.
Sounds pretty nice.
Set receiver tape monitor to tape.

Hope that Helps.
