Marantz 2440 opinions

Hi Guys,

I have been offered a non running 2440 quad, for the best part of £300. I personally think that that is too much, esp being this close to Christmas and being a chance purchase. I do not want to, however, discuss the price because that is not why I'm posting. I wondered how any of you feel about the 2440.

What I really want is a 4400. I was wondering how this 2440 unit compares to the 4400 in terms of specs and also sq? Any opinions would be greatly received. Possibly a stop gap quad until the right 4400 comes up?

I'm not sure what your price is in US bucks, but they sell for under $100 frequently around here.

I have one and have paired it with a 2230 and a 2270. I can't really comment on SQ, I don't have enough experience. It sounded much like the 22xx and seemed to put out plenty of power for the "rear" speakers.

It is nice to have the extra blue meters, that's always cool, but I had a hard time getting the thing turned up enough to make the move - hooked up to Klipsch and couldn't turn the volume past 9 or 10 o'clock.

So IMO, plenty of power, sound comparable to the 22xx, great to look at. However, it does seem to reduce the effectiveness of the source tone controls, I think because the main unit gets turned up to about 75% volume. Not sure about that. I have currently removed the unit, mostly for cleaning up the audio rack.

That's like $600 in NA terms, ones working on ebay sell for $150-200 US. Guy is on crack to ask that kind of money for a non working one, $75 bucks and that's all. Quads aren't fun to work on either, double everything. Unless one falls in your lap or you want to learn the quad repair game grab one, otherwise I wouldn't bother. I only repaired one cause it was part of a trade, while I am impressed by my 4230 I have my sights out for a 4400- I have 3 units with the scope, i'd love a 4th.

Thanks for the replies guys. I want a big stick to beat him down with. How were they as a receiver, were they quite a well powered amplifier? My current receivers are all 30wpc and less. I was looking for a bit of American v8 muscle in my stable.

:lmao: Actually, they really suck as far as receivers go...because it is NOT a receiver. It's just a quad amp.

Dingman, what are those speakers your equipment is sat on?

Those are a set of old Wharfedale W60's. They are quite the well built speaker, unfortunately they don't sound good in my systems, they sound muddy. I did re-cap them but possibly the tweets are not performing well. Alot of people really like them, so I assume something isn't right... I didn't play with them too much to figure it out.
