Marantz 2440 Recap Thread

sickofsoyo

Kollege Karma
Just finished a 2220b, and am now ready to move on to a 2440 I have paired with it. There isnt too much information on this unit around so I will fill in some of the unknown hopefully.

The unit I have is a champaign face, Serial number 1905, so it is an early production unit. Please check yours for values to verify they are the same. I do not take responsibility if you mess up your unit performing a recap. This is simply for the sake of hopefully making it easier to do the procedure.

That Being said...

Here is a quick drawing of the unit if you are looking from the top. I have numbered the boards and will break it down by board the caps located there:

good luck on your recapping venture. I hope it all works out well for you, it should be an exercise in patience and mental focus. that certainly is a truck load of caps, what brand are you going to use on the electrolytic caps?

Shawn

Shawn, I havent decided yet. I'm probably gonna use Elna Silmic IIs, but I havent figured out what I'm going to use in place of 6, 7, and 8 on the diagram. I know 2 of them are main filter caps, but not sure what the third one is for. They are odd values so I'll keep you updated with the final parts list. The hardest part of doing a recap on this unit is the sheer number of wires inside and the number of connections on each board. The 2220b was definately a lot easier. This will be more of a challenge.

For 6 and 8, I will most likely go with Nichicon KG series at 63V 3300uF as the original spec caps are impossible to find. and 7 will be original spec KG series as well.

Here is the Final Shopping List:

1:
25V - 100uF Elna Silmic II
25V - 3.3uF x2 Elna Silmic II -50V
50V - 1uF x2 Elna Silmic II

2:
50V - 47uF x4 Elna Silmic II
50V - .47uF x2 Elna Silmic II
35V - 10uF x4 Elna Silmic II
10V - 100uF x2 Elna Silmic II -16V
35V - 22uF x2 Elna Silmic II

3:
50V - .47uF x2 Elna Silmic II
10V - 100uF x2 Elna Silmic II -16V
50V - 1uF x2 Elna Silmic II
16V - 10uF x4 Elna Silmic II
25V - 33uF Elna Silmic II

4:
50V - .47uF x2 Elna Silmic II
35V - 100uF Elna Silmic II
50V - 3.3uF x8 Elna Silmic II
35V - 22uF x2 Elna Silmic II

5:
50V - 3.3uF Elna Silmic II
10V - 1000uF Elna Silmic II
35V - 220uF Elna Silmic II

6:
55V - 3000uF Nichicon KG 63V-3300uF

7:
63V - 4700uF Nichicon KG

8:
55V - 3000uF Nichicon KG 63V-3300uF

9:
25V - 10uF x2 Elna Silmic II
50V - 3.3uF x6 Elna Silmic II
50V - 1uF x2 Elna Silmic II
25V - 33uF Elna Silmic II
50V - .47uF x2 Elna Silmic II
10V - 22uF x2 Elna Silmic II

I bought the silmic IIs at a combination of partsconnextion and hndme.com The nichicon I bought at mouser. I noted any differences from the original caps above. I did not find any bipolar caps in the unit. Questions, comments concerns? I did my best staying close to spec.

did you consider squeezing in a few mylar caps where the signal path counted. if you want to keep it original then by all means but a mylar cap or two in the right place can make a huge difference.
Another method is to bypass electrolytic signal path caps with a very small mylar cap.

Shawn

Looks like you are going to be ripping through some equipment now. You have it down pretty good. I do not know what the rest of your system is, but you may when you are done this one, go back to the 2220B and this one and do some level II or level III upgades to get even more out of them. I am working on these 2nd and 3rd stage upgrades now, which includes film caps (not the 1.39 type), bypass caps (where they work only), and upgading some of the wiring that will make a difference. Please keep us updated as you move along.

Shawn,

Im going to do it all as electrolytic for now and keep it original, and I will make changes and upgrades as needed.

Pat,
Definately, I want to get my equipment all put together and finished and then I'll start making the changes and upgrades from there

I have all the caps on order, I just have to wait for the 63V 3300uF because theyre back ordered. I will be posting pictures of the 2220b soon also once I get it cleaned up to a point I think its presentable. The inside is still pretty dirty in some places and its kind of stuck on in some places, mostly on the FM boards. Hopefully the cap list I posted here will help someone, that was the main intent of the thread. All in all, it was about 40 for all the parts. Now I gotta wait. :smoke:

here's what appears to be a factory update sometime in the 2440's production life....see the two caps at the bottom (2200uf, 50V) This one was built in 1973...I have a parts unit that was built in 1972 that does not have this change. Even though I can find no service bulletin/service manual reference to these caps, I'd say the factory look of the plate and wiring (and the fact that my father bought it new and never had it serviced) means it's Marantz' work.

Thats actually really interesting... I don't have those two caps in my unit. Does anyone have a service manual for the 2440 so I can do a little investigative work? Whats the serial number on the back of your amp? Mine is pretty early, so I'd assume yours is a later revision...

ser no 6851 has the two extra caps
ser no 2827 does not (this is my parts unit)

i have the service manual from Rick at StereoManuals.com. It has two service bulletins, neither are regarding these two extra caps. Nothing in the schematics or parts lists show these two either.

I really want to support Rick so he continues to be a good resource to folks like us (I've got manuals for my 2215, 2440 and 1200 from him), so I won't scan/copy his work. If you need it, please buy it from him, and you won't be disappointed. I'll verify things if you have specific questions, though.

Here's a list of verified elec. caps in ser no 6851. This matches the service manual:

If you take a look at both the parts unit and your in use unit, do you see any other differences between the two? Anything under the hood, like wires going different places or caps missing up top? I guess I know why marantz really is notorious for having horrible SM's haha. Sorry, I dont mean to ask too much, I'm just curious about those caps and would like to try to get to the bottom of it.

quick edit:
this is a picture of what the bottom of my unit looks like... note there is a whole section cut out that you have present. This is a really odd difference here...

I just looked at the parts unit and it looks exactly like yours.

My initial suspicion was that it was some kind of "hot rod" upgrade that a local shop did, but my father swears it came out of the sealed Marantz box like you see it (except those two non-Marantz feet, which I was test fitting, not being able to find originals at the time).

To answer your question, no wiring/routing/parts different. just two caps in parallel to the 3000uf caps.

So, did marantz get complaints that the 3000uf caps weren't handling and juice them up with a couple extra caps instead of just changing to larger rated units? Dunno. I discovered this 4 years ago, posted it about here, and it remains an unknown.

I recapped in this same configuration just for grins since it was a bit oddball to start with. I guess we need to find some other high serial number units to know for sure.

So if the two are in parallel, that would make the main filter caps have a voltage of 50V and a capacitance of 7200uF thats actually very interesting. I may order a couple extra filter caps at that capacitance and see if there is a difference. Anyone else want to chime in here? Any ideas as to WHY marantz would do that? or what the benefit of the extra capacitance would do?

a 2200uf in parallel with a 3000uf: 5200uf cap. so two 5200uf equivalent capacitance "sets"

oops, yep youre right. for some reason I thought the original main filters were 5000... I wasnt thinking straight.
