Never heard of this. Actually, the 2500 was more reliable than the 2600.

Looking over the photos, the unit shows FM reception but not in Stereo. This is potentially a big problem or it could be a control cleaning, which is also a big job. The top looks like it has been re-sprayed recently. I would say $3k is a mistake for this unit.

If you're concerned about blowing transformers the 2500, 2600 and Pioneer SX-1980 all are susceptible. They have a very high inrush current on power up with designs that try to limit the stress.

I would be more concerned about the overall physical condition first then the scope and FM section. If it powers on and plays anything the transformer is as good as anyone can tell.

I've seen more dead 2600s than 2500s... I own two 2500s I use regularly with zero issues. The 2600 basically had the 2130 tuner (quartz locked), but I have zero drift issues with either of my 2500s and the few decibels of separation at 1000 Hz are irrelevant given the quality of FM transmission in North America these days. Assuming you don't drive them to MMA sound levels and short outputs I'm sure either a 2500 or 2600 will give you good satisfaction. And honestly the 50wpc difference is NOT worth the premium the 2600 commands... remember the rule of sound doubling vs RMS... 50 wpc is an eyedropper of water in an olympic sized pool.
