Marantz 2600 on Epray needs repair

It's crap. This guy has been trying to sell this for a while. He had it on the 'Bay for a $1,300 min bid about a month ago, needing repair, and that was before he stripped out the drivers and output transistors (perhaps to sell in another auction)! This unit almost certainly has a shorted primary in its power transformer - the "kiss of death" in a 2600. Superrob has been selling vintage gear on eBay for years, and knows exactly what he's doing, and knows very well what a working 2600 is worth. Trust me, if he could have fixed this for less than $1K, he would have!

Stay clear of this one, unless you're just after the parts. :thumbsdn:

He had this up for sale last week but no bids. Is that right, that he wants $100 for the service manual? Yikes!

He was getting low prices for his auctions, mostly due to poor pictures and bad decriptions, so he's recently turned to stripping everything down to parts. Face plate in one auction, the rest in another, that sort of thing. Apparently has a house full of stuff - but is not a tech so he has to pay people to fix stuff for him hence the parted out busted gear....

Dunno -- it's being sold as a parts unit only, looks OK to me. In fact, looks like a pretty good parts unit; wouldn't mind getting my sweaty paws on this one, as I now have a 2600 that has a few issues. I'll agree with skijbr -- probably a shot transformer, if it's not worth fixing (then again, it's a 2600, and probably is worth fixing at some point). The auction looks alright to me, though; I wonder what this unit will go for?

Check out the bidding history - look fishy to you?? :scratch2:
D'oh! I just realized eBay appears to have gone to displaying alias names for bidders in lieu of showing bidder IDs, so I retract my previous comment.

My guess is that, even without outputs and drivers, this'll go for around 1K. There was a power transformer for an SX1980 on the 'Bay last week, and I was getting some crazy ideas about putting together an outboard PS for this 2600..... but.....naaahhh! :screwy:
