Marantz 3200 Headphone jack

While auditioning a Marantz 3200 alongside a Marantz 140, I first plugged in a set of headphones, but because the speakers were only patched into the marantz 140, the headphone jack of the 3200 gave me nothing, that is until I patched in the speaker out from the Marantz 140 to the speaker in on the 3200. Is this the normal/default behaviour, or does the preamp have a problem?

p.s and if the above behaviour is default, is it default across the board for Marantz pre-amps of the same vintage/epoc (from the 7 series to the 3800)?

Yep that's correct.

Then you can also turn the speakers off and listen to the headphones only.
