Hello.

I will really appreciate your help and knowledge on this topic. I'm from Spain and i'm the original owner of a Marantz Model 3300 preamp and Model 250 amp combo. I need help finding someone that can perform a performance verification according to the service manuals, and repair-upgrade if it's necessary (maybe recap needed?). No matter if i need to send it overseas if that person it's a truly expert in this kind of models or he did it before.

Best regards.

What ever you do, do not get caught up in any ebay restoration scams without researching the tech for bad feedback.
If you research back on the marantz forum, You will find posts by guys doing restorations and they may be able to help.
Just be careful! There are guys out there that will take your equipment and your money.

It is very smart of you to ask for help from us.
Oh, by the way...Happy Fathers Day!, John

Hi jlocked,

Good advice form John. You will find some good people on this site but, as always, be sure to check references. I used to have the same combination you have. Traded it a few years ago...

...and some advice on packaging your units if you do find a good tech to ship it to... Ship both units separately. If they're in wood cabinets, take them out and hang on to the cabinets at home. Wrap them in plastic and use SOLID sheets of styrofoam (NOT foam peanuts) fully surrounding each unit so that they cannot move at all in their box. Use double-layer corrugated boxes. Then get a bigger double-layer corrugated box, put some foam in it (you can use foam peanuts on this one), and place the first box inside, filling it all around with peanuts or whatever. Once again, make sure it cannot move at all. Of course use the best tape you can get to seal them all up, and they should be bullet proof no matter where you send them. I have received several amps and pre-amps with bent edges because the shippers just used peanuts and didn't consider how horrible they would be handled no matter the carrier.

Forgive me if you already know all this, but I think it's worth saying out loud as a reminder to everyone who has to ship his or her beloved components. Good luck!!

Mike

Doing a Performance Verification is not a terribly difficult thing to do and it only requires most most basic of Audio Test Equipment. The idea of shipping your equipment from Spain to the USA just to have this testing done, seems excessively risky from a potential damage point of view and then there's the expense for shipping these 2 heavy units half way around the world (don't forget about the return shipping).

It would seem that there must be someone in Spain (or at least in greater Europe) that can do this simple task for you.

Can you help Juan out with this Chris?
Mikes packing advice is spot on, and you can add another 2" layer just in case the plane goes down..... To much is not enough.
I sold one of my vintage Conn Tenor saxophones to Yugoslavia years ago and the guy spent over an hour opening it, and called it "Almost impenetrable Packaging"

Not only will securely packing your components preserve them, but the packing job will inform the tech that you REALLY care about these things, and that you EXPECT the same kind of care from him or her. Make a statement!!

Thank you Chris. Yes, i suppose that someone here in Spain can do the performance verification. But from my previous experiences with the techs here in Spain, i dont trust them anymore. The only couple of scratches in my units, guess from who come from? Yes, from an official Marantz service center.

So, other that the performance verification, you would not do a recap if all is ok?

Once again, thank you all for your time on this topic.

Regards.

For longevity I would replace the capacitors in both units.
