I have a Marantz 3300 that I have not really used very much. I took it off the shelf today and want to put it in rotation.

I noticed it has speaker outs on the back. Can you hook speakers up to this and listen to them directly, as if it were an amplifier?

I dont have the user manual so I am a bit confused - this is a preamp.

I don't believe the preamp can drive speakers directly. What you may have is the ability to switch speakers from the preamp after the output from the amp, but not sure.

It may be like the Spec series Pioneers where this lets you switch between A and B speaker sets with the preamp.

Its hard to tell by the small picture but the vertical set may be for the inputs from the outputs on the power amp and the other two sets on the right are the A and B outputs.
 
You can connect speaker cables from your power amp to the Marantz 3300 preamp, and then cables to two speaker pairs from the 3300. Then you have speaker switching from the preamp, even if your power amp doesn't have it. Worked well with my 3300.

Aw, spoilsport! You gave the secret away! :D

Actually, that is exactly what the function is for. My 3650s and 3250B also have this speaker-selector function, in each case with 2 pairs of speakers to choose from (not three). Even if your power amp has multiple speaker choices built-in, this is a way of adding to the total speaker choices you can have available. Nice for "speaker freaks" who enjoy comparing sounds and picking different speakers for different types of music.

I saw it was only capable of putting out 3V RMS so I thought I might be able to use it for bookshelf or low level listening. From what I read now, I understand what the intentions were.

I had never seen a preamp with speaker posts before, which is why I asked.
