Hello friends,
Picked up a Marantz 3800 pre today and when I fired it up I have low output from the left channel. At about one o-clock on the volume control it kicks in. I thought maybe a dirty control pot but after cleaning it the song remains the same. I haven't continued the much needed cleaning of the entire unit yet and was wondering if maybe one of the other controls had an influence over the function of the volume control or left channel output. Anyone have any repair experience with one of these or have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help offered!

I haven't worked on a 3800 before, however I would suspect the tape monitor switches first. With all of those switches as possible problem points, I would clean them all before looking for more complicated problems.
 
Sounds like a control cleaning should do the job. Hopefully it isn't not the IC chip which is unobtanium.
 
Ok so went through each control and deoxt them and the problem still exists. I found however that if I switch into Dolby and turn the gain up all the way (with Dolby play calibration at zero) I can then control volume through both channels independently via the Dolby play calibration controls. Which, to me, indicates that the problem lies in the volume control pot itself which as I said previously kicks the left channel in at about one o-clock. Is this an accurate assumption? Thanks for the advice

Well, for the test, you wouldn't. This suggestion is just to see if the problem is that pot alone, or elsewhere. Bypassing it will give you the same result as having it turned all the way to the right.
