Marantz 4270 FM Tuning Meter problem

Hi guys,

I have a problem with a Marantz 4270 and especially with the FM Tuning Meter.

Ok, I have to be exactly and it is not me, it is the 4270 of a friend. He told me right now that when tuning in for a FM station and the reception is really wonderful, the FM Tuning Meter flips randomly around the midpoint all the time.

Do you have any ideas for the cause of this behaviour?

I noticed exactly the same behavior in a 4270 I recently picked up, and for which I'm collecting parts for a recap. It's nearly impossible to center the needle, even on a strong station. It sounds fine, however. I have no idea what the cause is, but I'm anxious to hear if someone else has a solution.
 
L201 upper core may need some adjusting, use the proper plastic tools if you want to attempt it. Step 7 in the fm alignment section of the manual. Tune it to a station and adjust it.
 
Thanks for the replys but is there also an alignment necessary when the reception of the station is really strong or could it be sth. else?

It's a step in the alignment that focuses on the tuning meter, just because it tunes strong doesn't mean anything when it comes to this step. The several steps before this one have everything to do with strength from a listening standpoint.
 
no, without the test gear and knowledge you'll make a mess. Just what I stated in my first post, just the upper core of l201, you won't get in to trouble.

Right now I am observing some plastic tools to make that because my 2325 has the behaviour that the tuning meter doesnt move the first seconds. then it is starting to move. Further when the unit is powered off the tuning needle is a little bit on the left side and not in the center? Is this the same phenomenom as for the 4270. I mean do I also have to trace back the tuning meter on the shematic to look for the error?

You may just have a sticky meter. Sometimes wiping the face of the meter with a dryer sheet (Bounce) will remove static and make the meter center and work smoothly, if not replacement may be your only alternative.

Thanks, too, from me, bktheking. I'm at the moment adjusting an old Philco 48-482 FM section, and it's agonizing! I think I'm pretty close to done, but I would much rather deal with an isolated problem than align the whole caboodle on a Marantz.

Have not yet started, but I promise pictures a progress notes regardless of positive or otherwise...
 
I've had dealings with marantz meters in my 1130. If it is indeed sticking and toms suggestion does not work you can try something else. Remove the meter and remove the face, this will give you access to the hairpin set screw. If the unit has been sitting for years they can bind up. Get yourself some faderlube and a set of jeweller screwdrivers and loosen the set screw slightly and hit it with the faderlube, it will loosen up and work correctly again.

It is not much but nevertheless it is tilted to the left :) :)
