Marantz 4270 Source Selector

Hi audio noob here, I have two questions regarding my 4270. My current setup is a Marantz 4270, Marantz 2440, Marantz 5220 and Marantz 6300.

Firstly, I have a cassette deck, TT and AUX cord plugged into the back, obviously using the selector switch to cycle through them, but I was wondering what the other two settings (Tape 1 & 2) in the selector dial are for, and how to use them. Currently I can listen to the cassette deck with the selector in PHONO or CD-4/AUX when the tape monitor button is pushed in (on the 2440).

Secondly, I am trying to connect a Pioneer SG-9500 EQ to the system and don't really know how...

Don’t understand your question I’m afraid.. but I can guess what you mean. Assuming that your question is why the tape inputs are both on the selector and the monitor switches... If only for playback purposes: if you have a source connected to tape 1 or 2 input, for playback you can select the source by either using the selector or the tape monitor button. Tape monitor “overrules” the selector setting.

Tape monitor was used for tape monitoring while recording and for playback. A tapedeck while recording sends the audio signal from the “playback head” audio to it’s output terminals for monitoring purposes.

Most cassette decks have 2 tapeheads, one for erase and one for record and playback. Using the monitor switch on a 2 head deck while recording would give you the sound as fed to the record/playback head.

Some cassette decks and reel-to-reel decks have 3 heads.On a 3 head deck you will have 1 head for erase, one for record and one for playback. The record head is fysically placed before the playback head. A 3 head deck allows for monitoring: while recording (record head) you can hear the result you just recorded via tape monitor (playback head).

Amps with only 1 tape connection (record and play) usually have no tape option on the selector, only a tape monitor switch. Using the monitor switch is sufficient for this: you hear either the source or with monitor switch engaged the tape playback. And you can do monitoring while recording. Monitor switch out and you hear the source (e.g. phono) monitor in you hear the signal from the deck.

On an amp with 2 tape connections like the 4270 you can record from tape 1 to 2 and vice versa. In this case you need to select one of the tapedecks as source (e.g tape 1) with the selector. To hear the recorded sound (playback) on the other deck (tape 2) obviously you would not select tape 2 on the selector b/c that would then become the source, thus to monitor what is being recorded from tape 1 to tape 2 you use the corresponding monitor switch (tape 2).

Haha nevermind, it is in the manual after all. I guess it helps to read through 3-4 times! (or be thorough the first time...)
