Snagged a 4300 at yard sale. On one side using the front speakers i get very low volume/sound irregardless of the volume level. Sound is clear and without distortion, but simply will not increase with volume knob. What I my up against??

Are the pre-main jumpers installed?
Have you cleaned the rear panel local/remote switch?
The rear panel power mode switch also may need to be cleaned. Never, ever cycle this switch with the unit powered up or you risk damaging the amps.

Crafter has good advice for you. I will add that you should clean all of the switches and controls with DeOxit. Additionally, with the unit powered down, cycle the tape monitor switches on and off about 100 times. Then power up and try again. If the tape monitor switches are dirty (tarnished), which they very likely are, they can give you the symptom that you are experiencing. The tape monitor switch is in the signal path between the pre-amp section and the amplifier section so if they are not making a good internal connection you can loose all or part of the signal to one or both channels, or in your case two of the four amplifier channels.

The 4300 is a great receiver but it can be a pain to work on because of the quantity of boards and components that are close to each other inside the cabinet. Be careful...

Many Thanks!!

I have spent the last hour doing as you folks suggested, and am pleased to say I have both channels up and sounding great. A big 'THANK YOU' to you both! Wayne

Excellent! Enjoy!!

The next thing to do is to get a service manual and then check and adjust the bias and DC offset on each amplifier. It is not difficult, other than the close quarter on the 4300, on Marantz amplifiers. A couple of typical multimeters with small clip probes will make the job fairly easy.

I - today - got a 4300 in pretty much mint order, not even that dirty, from my local car boot sale, on testing it - after about an hour I heard a pop/bump, not mega loud - but then I noticed the right channel had decreased in volume, on using balance - I could hear non distorted sound from the right chan, and turing up up the vol did increase it but only a bit, cleaned the switches as suggested above, but still no joy.
I am not familiar with these receivers and it looks a complex piece so I will be appreciative of any advice.
