Marantz 5020 PLAY REC switch repair

Hi everyone, Recently my 5020 has been having intermittent audio issues.
I have traced it to the PLAY -REC switches on the PCB. Tried Deoxit on it but didn’t yield any improvement.
I decided to desolder the switches and try to fix it.
What I found after opening is the contacts were covered with black layer of dirt. I cleaned it with rubbing a piece of paper without any cleaning solvent. it shined and I fixed it back. Now it woks like a charm. Just wanted to share it here so it helps someone. Will try to add pics.

This is great info. I have rebuilt a couple of these and found that switch to be the heartbeat of the electronics. To use a little local slang - If it ain’t right, nothing’s right. In both cases, a good Deoxit cleaning worked for me. It’s good to know there is a level 2 fix if Deoxit doesn't work. I don’t think you would ever find a replacement for one. Nice work!

Hi Steven, deoxit is a life saver in most cases, but didn’t work in my case, I didn’t attempt to source for a new switch, Coz I think it’s unobtanium. So the switch repair was carried out.
Thank you for your encouragement.
Regards
Nat

I recently started having issues with my Marantz 5020 as well. Upon playing a cassette, the right channels VU was off the charts and the right channel’s audio was harsh and magnitudes louder than the left.

it was working a few days ago so not sure what could have caused such a drastic change in just a few days. I opened it up for a visual inspection and it looked pristine as I had last seen it - no obvious issues on the boards and no water damage. I then inspected the PLAY / PAUSE / REC / STOP_EJECT etc levers. I could not locate the parts you included in your images. Would you mind helping me figure out where those contacts are!?

I went pretty heavy on the Deoxit pretty much anywhere I saw a connection. Happy to report the tape deck is playing normally now. Still, could not find those pets in the images.

Thanks for helping me figure out this issue!

That switch sits on the left edge of the main board, with the switch plunger facing the transport. There is a lever from the transport that moves that switch in and out varying distances, depending on what mechanical switch lever is pressed. You can't miss that long silver switch running left to right. If it is dirty - and they usually are - all kinds of malfunctions will happen. For me, a good Deoxit cleaning has always worked. But if that doesn't work, it might require disassembly and cleaning like the OP said.

Looks like there might be two similar switches. I didn't remember that, but here is a pic of the basic location from a bad copy of the service manual.

A big "thumbs up" to the OP for repairing that switch! I restored the transport from a 5020 about 2 years ago and it was one of the most difficult I had worked on! I'm posting a picture of the internals, where you can see where those long switches are located and the amount of wiring over them that you have to deal with!

I had both the 5020 and 5220. I did some work on both. Changing belts, speed adjustment, micro switch adjustments, cleaning and some lube, etc. These wre not my favorite decks to work on at all. My son still has the 5220 I gave him. I love the looks if these decks though.

Thank you for taking the time to do that! I’ll be sure to check next time I open up the unit (hopefully not for a while).
For now, I’ll enjoy the sound and look of the deck. I really enjoy seeing the tape lit up in the transport. Small detail but I think it is pretty neat! It’s my only deck that does that.

You're welcome! Here's the link I posted over at Tapeheads a few years ago about my 5020... http://www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=78924
The biggest issue was the Auto-stop function, which was solved with the SCY4.2 belt. Vintage Electronics supplied me with the belt set, which included a SCY4.0 belt. That size was just too short to allow the Auto-Stop function to work properly. I let Bob know about this and he sent me a SCY4.3, which ended up being a tad too long and the A-S function would not work properly in all modes. The issue was solved by using a SCY4.2! I let Bob know about this, but not sure if this is now the belt he uses in his belt kit.

Thanks dude! I appreciate your time and consideration. I was able to locate the contacts as you showed in your post.

My auto-stop function is a bit wonky as well. It will auto stop when the cassette tape reaches its end but not when I fast forward/rewind to the cassette end/beginning respectively. Makes me nervous because at the speed the tape is turning, I imagine older tape might just snap at the sudden increase in tension. I'll look in to replacing that belt and ask if that spec is included in the kit. Thanks for being helpful ya'll!
