Marantz 5220 Popping sound on one channel

I have a Marantz 5220 cassette deck that I purchased in a non working condition. It had no main drive belt so I put on an old one that I had from another 5220 that I installed new belts on, put it back together and it worked like a charm. The sound was amazing. It now records, fast forwards, and rewinds. The day after I had it all working, now one channel will play sound intermittently along with a 'boom-boom" sound that is regular and sounds just like a heart beat. The VU Meter even moves with the sound.

That's a common symptom of dirty play/record switches. You'll need to spray them with contact cleaner.

Thank you for your response. Is it ok to get the cleaner on the pc boards and the various electronics?

There's bound to be some overspray, but do whatever you can to keep it to a minimum. This is especially important in a cassette deck where the residual lubricant might migrate to belts and clutches.

I have a can of Deoxit for sliders. I barely sprayed anything into the switches and Presto! She started working like a brand-new deck!!! It was like magic! I cleaned the minimal overspray and it's been playing tapes for the past 6 hours. I with that there was instructions on lubing all the sliding components in the tape transfer unit. LOTS of sliding things in there.
