Marantz 5220 restore

I'm working on restoring a Marantz 5220 cassette deck for my personal collection.
I bought it from the auction site not working for parts...
Cosmetically it seems to be in fairly good condition.
The buttons depress and click like they are supposed to. So far so good.
None of the ff/rw/play etc work. I can't hear the motor running. So I thought it might just need belts. I ordered a replacement set.
Several months pass and I keep looking at it not working on the shelf and decide to open it up.

Bad news,
It appears someone had been in it before. I could see a few switches where the wires were disconnected, there was a superglue repair on one of the pulleys.

Good news, someone had already replaced the belts. Although they were thinner/cheaper looking that the replacement set I have, so I replaced them. I clean the heads alcohol and the pinch roller with rubber restore.

I power the deck on, and put in a cassette, and the pinch roller was going backwards.

I removed the transport to look at what is going on.

I think they reconnected the leads on the motor backwards.

It's behaving strangely. I can't find any photos of how its supposed be. The ff doesn't work correctly.

Does anyone have any detailed photos of the transport, the springs underneath, etc. Even a video would be amazing. I am trying to get this working and will document it here for future reference.

I have rebuilt a couple of 5020's. I can't be of much help except to note that in both units, when transport control levers didn't get the proper response, it ultimately came down to dried grease keeping parts in the mechanism from moving properly. I remember that in both cases, a pawl that was supposed to move under light spring load would not move when pressing the pause button. That kept the many points of motion from happening that were supposed to happen. So, if pressing a lever is not working, study the movement of parts and clean/relube any lubricated points of contact. I also found the long switches with many terminals at the edge of the PC board to be causing all kinds of malfunctions until I cleaned them with Deoxit. These are the switches on the PC board that are actuated by a lever on the transport. If they are not moving properly or have bad internal contacts, all kinds of electrical anomalies will happen. Good luck with it. These units are not only beautiful to look at, they sound quite good considering they are cassette players.

Have you needed to replace the idler tire on any of the ones you have worked on. Im suprised I haven't seen any idler kits around
 
I think you are referring to the pinch roller. I always replace that. It’s been a while, so can’t remember if there were any other rubber wheels. If so, I didn’t replace them. I just replace the belts and pinch roller.

I was referring to the tire under the cassette mech. Between the gears
 
No, if it’s not the pinch roller, I haven’t replaced it. My guess is if one was damaged, it would take a donor unit to replace it.
