At my wits end....I own a beautiful vintage Marantz 6200 TT in excellent condition, except for the stylus. The only option I can find is to replace it, with the same cheap Shure 70b stylus. I would like to upgrade the stylus but it feels like I’m looking for plutonium. Is it possible that the Shure 70b is the only option!? Any help would be much appreciated.

There isn’t a name/number on the cartridge.

Where did you get Shure 70b from then? Was there a stylus marked that on it or was that taken from the manual or a sticker on the 6200?

That does look like a Shure M70 cartridge and will accept a few Shure styli. Have you removed the cartridge from the headshell to see if there is a name on top?

Anyway, you certainly are NOT limited to a Shure M70 on that turntable. That might just be what it shipped with when new.
 
May I recommend that you purchase a nice, used Shure M95 and a new HE stylus from Jico. That is what is on my 6200 and it sounds real nice.
 
You could literally put any cartridge you want on there. Why are you so stuck on this stylus in particular? It’s really nothing to write home about.

I could think of dozens of cartridges I’d rather put on there.
