Marantz 940

Hello Folks,
I just recently purchased a pair of Marantz 940 speakers. The woofers have been replaced with MTX woofers. I was wondering if I should replace the MTX drivers with original Marantz drivers, upgrade them to something better still or leave'm be? They don't sound bad... not real great either. Although I haven't had the opportunity to drive them with a real quality system just yet. I would like to know what other folks think of them.

Kind regards,
Steve

REPLACE

MTX are generic drivers, the original were designed to go in those cabinets, with those other drivers, using that crossover.

Original is better..sound and value when reselling

Thanks - any ideas where one might find a set of original drivers? Are you familiar with these speakers? Are they worth keeping? I paid $130.00 for the pair.

Can't recall if my buddy had 920 or 940, but pretty sure the 940. These were designed by a former JBL engineer. If you look at JBL speakers from the same era you'll see similarities in the driver designs. They are nice speakers. I also agree with installing the original woofers. Likely the old ones were changed out when the foams rotted. Typical.

Pars do show up. Many of the drivers you often find listed are due to people not wanting to deal with re-foaming. So just keep an eye out. If you can get the part number, all the better. Sometimes they'll be listed by part number due to sellers not knowing what they may have come from.

I just picked up a pair for $50 at St. Matthew's in Naples.

I have the same issue with the woofer. Does anyone have the original part number so I can start searching?

Thanks!

If nothing original can be found- the Dayton Classic 12" (see here: http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-dc300-8-12-classic-woofer--295-320 ) should work well as a substitute. It's similar in sensitivity and response to the original, and will work with the existing cabinet size and tuning.

If you're looking for an original, the woofers from any of the following Marantz models are appropriate:

DS920
DS930
DS940
HD770
HD880

Regards,
Gordon.
I don't think the dayton 12 will fit. I measured the marantz trim ring lip for woofer at 11 3/4" and cabinet hole diameter is just 10 1/2' for my DS940's

Most modern 12" woofers will probably require enlarging the holes in the DS series cabinets.

That said- the OP already had MTX woofers installed. That would imply that the holes are already enlarged- as the MTX woofers will have about the same required cabinet opening size, as the Daytons.

Regards,
Gordon.
