Marantz CD60 runs hot

I picked up a CD60 from ebay last week for $600. The previous owner said it wasn't that old and he decided to buy the CD50 because he wanted the streamer also that it had. It looks Great. After playing it for a few days it seems to be running a little warmer than what I think it should. Do these units run warm like that? It's sitting on top of my 2238B and it isn't adding any heat to it as far as I can tell, but the space between them is just what the feet are on the CD60. I also have it running through a DAC with a coax cable. I just finished playing 5 CDs. Just wondering if this is normal for this unit?

I would remove the cover and check for excessive dust that might be blocking any vents.

Mine doesn't run abnormally warm. I've also used it both ways with it's internal dac and presently as a transport only with an rca cable. Neither way got any excessive heat out of it. Perhaps move it off the top of your 2238 and see if that improves things.

No heat out of mine, as mentioned above, amps most likely best on top for airflow.

I would put more space between the amp and cd. Ventilation is important to keep temperature regulated, even if it doesn't get to the hot level.
If you are concerned, thermal cameras can be purchased cheaply from China (you don't need high resolution). When it gets warm take off the cover, and view the circuit boards through the thermal camera, if a component(s) is/are failing they will show very hot on the circuit board, and will indicate it needs asap attention from a technician.

I sent it back for a refund. Occasionally it would skip, or pause for a second before resume playing. I had a couple of instances where it wouldn't read the disc when first placing it in the tray, and I had to reposition the disc, sometimes more than once. I also noticed an electric smell when opening the tray after a couple of hours of playing. It was just too much of an investment to have these issues right out of the box.

This is the new production CD60?

Yes, although the seller said it was only a couple of months old, the sticker on the back had a July 2024 date.

My Marantz CD6007, bought new in the fall of 2024, has always had this smell. I think it's slowly fading as time goes by, because now I can't feel it unless I get very close to the drawer and sniff, whereas at first it was quite obvious.
Also, I used to think it ran hot, until I checked with an infrared thermometer and saw that what felt worryingly warm to the touch was actually just 30-something degrees centigrade, which is well within normal limits. Our senses aren't that reliable.
But of course, if it skips or pauses, that's definitely not normal and is reason enough to return it.

Tip: if you're in the market for a well-priced Marantz CD player, you can also consider the CD6007. It's virtually identical to the CD60, except for the plastic vs. aluminum front panel (but it's good quality plastic and doesn't look or feel cheap) and the DAC (which doesn't matter if you use an external one anyway). It's half the price of a CD60 and just as good. The CD transport is the same in both.

I considered the 6007, mainly because of the cost. But I found this CD60 on ebay for $600, and after the owner said it was only 2mos old, that was a no brainer purchase. I wasn't sure if he was completely honest with me, or disclosed everything, but said he bought a CD50 only because he wanted the streamer it had. Streamers are a lot less to purchase separately. And he didn't send to me in it's original box; being it was only supposedly 2 mos old and a warranty card wasn't included. He sent it to me in the CD50 box. I didn't think I could exercise the warranty not being in its original box, and without a purchase receipt, so I just sent it back.

About the 6007, doesn't that include an external amp also? I hear from reviews that if you wanted it only for a transport, and if I was already was using other components like my receiver, it wouldn't be that good of a choice?

I have a CD5004 I bought years ago, and I run it with a DAK. I haven't had a minute's worth of issues with it; I did buy it new though. I mainly was wanting a silver unit to add to my living room where I use a Marantz 2238B, or 2285B. I started with the 2285B for several years, but it was time to refurb it and stuck the 2238B in there and was pleasantly surprised with it's sound. Plenty of power for my living room. Now it has aged and needs refurbing also. The 2285B is almost ready. I still need to check out the FM section as one channel is out, and realign the FM too.

No, it doesn't include an amp. Only an internal DAC, should you choose to use it, but no amp. It's a basic CD player. For all intents and purposes it's identical to CD60. Same features, same connectors, same hardware (except the DAC), same supported file formats, same everything. It's practically a CD60 for half the price, only with a different front panel.
It's great as a transport. That's how I'm using it, actually.
