Marantz Face Plate colors - Champagne & Gold

I've heard the term champagne used to describe one particular color of early Marantz face plate, but I've since come to find out there are a few shades of gold in the early years too.

Top left = Engraved 1200 - light gold - serial #2159
Bottom left = Non-engraved 2230 - bright gold - serial #5468
Top right = Engraved 2215 champagne - serial #1649 also have serial #3376 (same)
2245 silver for reference.

I was surprised that this 2230, which is just over the 5,000 units mark, is not champagne really, and is also not engraved.

Champagne is gold with a salmon or pinkish hue to it.

If you have any of the gold or champagne models, and wouldn't mind adding your serial number, please post pics. Also, I've never seen an actual champagne engraved face plate past the 5,000 serial number, have you?

Nice! I think that's the console light-gold color though, and engraved, like the 1200 above. Do you see any pink in yours?

No discerning pink that I can see. And it isn't engraved, just well preserved! If I can believe the seller this sat on his garage for 17 years. Every component inside is original and I am getting the parts to recap it even though it sounds great as it is. Just need to be careful because this is the 1st generation with FETs and I am not sure I can find these.

I'm really surprised to hear your 33 isn't engraved. Made in US model, with a super low serial number, very cool!

EDIT: I've used the NTE FET's in a separate project, they work very well for me. If that's your only choice, it should go well.

I have to say the silk screening on it is really good. I took it apart for cleaning (lots of tar from smoking on the back of the knobs) and did it very slowly not to disturb it. Definitely a keeper. I have only 3 units (others are a 1120 and a 240) and I have to confess I don't care that much for the ones made in japan forward. Or the much much earlier models. So I am boxed in pretty good lol

My 2270 champagne engraved is serial #9960, crazy huh? and my 2245 engraved is #4392 (early prototype model now fully restored/recapped used daily.

Another thing to watch out for, is people putting an engraved face plate on a later model stereo.

I have two 2215 engraved champagne models, from 1971, they both have the serial number stamped on the tag in the back, and they have the serial number in two other places, near the power supply:

I would not buy a "champagne" Marantz, without those chassis serial numbers. I certainly wouldn't pay a premium for it, without the chassis stamps.


Also, the knob color is different on a true champagne model, that has not been altered.

Fiquei surpreso que este 2230, que está pouco acima da marca de 5.000 unidades, não é champanhe mesmo, e também não está gravado.

O champanhe é dourado com um tom salmão ou rosado.

Se você tiver algum dos modelos de ouro ou champanhe e não se importar em adicionar seu número de série, poste fotos. Além disso, nunca vi uma placa frontal gravada em champanhe além do número de série 5.000, você viu?

I have two Marantz 2270, one of them is the rare model LIMITED EDITION CHAMPAGNE ENGRAVED FACEPLATE , with serial number 1030, that is, probably the thirtieth example of this model manufactured in the world. The other one, at the bottom of the photo, is a regular 2270 with a silver front.
