A friend of a friend runs a hi fi shop in a midwest city, and thu some email correspondence, I found out that he has a Marantz 2235 and a Quad 2440 amp in the 'back room' that came in on trade.

What do I offer a businessman who runs a stereo shop for these, and/or if he has a price in his mind already, what is the price point where I say, "Forget it!"?

The 2230 should have a "history" of sales on eBay. Somebody with access (bolly? bolly?) to the online Orion guide might chime in, too.
The 2440 might be harder to pin down.
 
If you do a "completed auctions" search on e bay, there's one of those 2440s that recently sold for $51 with speakers. Shipping was a bear though at $135. Probably would have done better to lose the speakers.

Here's a crazy idea: just ask him. He is a friend, right?

Then you say "ppppfht, never thought they were worth that much" and ask him what he credited as a trade.

Then offer him half :D Friends haggle with friends. It's fun!

Not a good comparison. It's high, but not as much as you might think.
Bare 4400s typically go in the $300-500 range on ebay, but the SQA-2B included goes for about $200 or so. The CD-400B probably between $50 and $100, so,
if you add it up, it's not that far off. The wired remote is also kind of hard to find, although perhaps more common with a receiver than separate.

The 4400s, while popular, are also common enough sellers that if you are willing to wait for a slightly beat-up one you can probably get one for significantly less if you're patient. The scope tends to give them a coolness factor that increases the popularity.

My Deusche isn't good enough to read the fine print, like condition on this one--my estimate of its price would be for it in pretty good condition.

The Marantz 2440 is a 4-Channel Adapter/Power Amplifier. It was designed to be added to a two channel stereo receiver or amplifier to add the additional switching and control functions to make a quadraphonic system. It also included a two channel amplifier designed to power the surround (rear) speakers. The combination of the 2235 with the 2440 would give the owner a complete quadraphonic system. The original suggested selling price was $299.95. Options included a SQ decoder module and the famous RC-4 remote control unit. The four lighted level meters make for a very attractive display.
 
I owned a 2440 for a while. It has capacitor-coupled power amps so sounds like a 1060.

The four meters are way cool and worth the money. All the controls are useful too. I think I sold my on eBay for about $75 if memory serves.
 
I think the answer is obvious..

The quad , while quite pretty, is also nearly worthless.

The 2235 is a 30 year old near bottom line receiver.

Now, they may have given the customer $100 each against some obscenely expensive, high profit equipment, but what they really gave them was 0 for the equipment, kept the customer happy and discounted something a little.

The fact that its forgotten about in a back room should really indicate its value to them and in their mind.

I'd think $10 each.. maybe $20 on the 2235. Don't ask them to waste their time hooking it up to listen to it.. drop the $20-$30 and run. In fact, on second thought I'd say "I am willing to play with it and see if it works.. I am trying to get a little retro look in my den and these fits.. I'll take both in case one doesn't work.. How about 10 bucks (not specifying each)" My guess is he'll take it and clear his stockroom.

That would be exactly what I'd do..

Remember, your mindset is that of a collector and afficienado, their outlook is "if it isn't A/V DTS nobody would even want it.." The reality is that they are closer to the real world and the general population than we are... Try to find a "stereo" store anymore.. You'll find A/V dealers that might have a few pieces. The mass market isn't where we are at.

I have moved it. Were the question just how good is it, it would have stayed where it was.
 
The 2235 is a decent receiver with a nice tuner. It would play well with the 2440. The 2440 is a add on amp/adapter to convert to four channel play.
(added on to a stereo receiver) Kind of an early day surround sound.

I had a 2440 with plug in module on the bottom. Also used a 4 channel cartridge and played 4 channel LPs. The 2440 isn't real powerful at about 15 wpc as I recall. Has 4 blue meters ! :banana:

The 2235 is a great one to play with. It will probably test out more like 40+ wpc, when tuned up.

Sure there's more powerful etc etc. (& more expensive) but if you can get it at a decent price, ....have fun. Will do more than you might imagine!:thmbsp:
 
funny, I signed up on AK just in hope of comming across a 2440 to mate up with my 2215. did you end up getting it? did it work? want to sell it? heh

If you like Marantz you will be happy with either one. I have/had a 2015, and 2238B and have 4140 quad amp they all sound and work beautifully, in typical Marantz fashion. Don't insult him by offering him $10. He's your friend, talk to the guy.
 
onepixel, I agree.

Talk to they guy and put the ball in his court by asking him what he wants for it. Chances are, he just wants it out and is not looking to make bux off of you.

This way, you are not taking the chance of offending him right off the bat, and if the price is too high, name yours and maybe he'll agree or meet you somewhere in the middle.

When I'm negotiating, I try to remember that it's just stuff, and the people part of the transaction (if they're decent people) is the most important part. I like to walk away feeling good from a buyer/seller who also feels happy about the outcome. Gained me a lot of friends in the long run.

Who knows what he'll come across in the future - if it doesn't work out this time, maybe he'll remember you if you're a good chap and he comes upon some other finery.

would the 2440 solve this problem of mine?

my marantz sr585 doesn't have a/b switching capability and i would like to have that . . . in order to have speakers in my kitchen.

or would buying an a/b switch be more practical?
