Marantz has crackle sound in phono stage.

My Marantz 2250b has a crackle or rustling sound when phono is selected. It kind of sounds like someone blowing across a microphone. I have tried 2 turntables and changed RCA cables. It is in both channels and goes up and down with volume and is quite noticeable even at 1/4 volume and it never used to exist. If you disconnect the tt but leave the RCA cables in, the sound goes away but it is independent of the tt being powered on or not.
Some time ago I recapped it including the P400 phono amp board but since it looks to not share any components between left & right, I can't see it being any failed component on the P400 board.
Ideas?

I had an issue with a crackly right channel on my 2230 when using the phono input. When asked on the forum a member suggested faulty transistors on the phono board (seems to be a common issue). I replaced the said transistors and it plays great now! Good luck.
 
The SC458 transistors are known to fail noisily. Marantz used 2 of them in many phono sections. This is likely what was replaced in the 2230 mentioned. In the 2250B, they are H405 and H406. You should replace them with KSC1845. While you're in there, you should also replace H409, a VD1212, with TWO 1n4448 diodes in series.
 
Since I get noise in both channels, does that not rule out the H405/406? But H409 is common to both channels so it could be the culprit.
 
OK - I will try this when I next order some components. For now I have an external tt amp so I'm in no great hurry but this is great information.
