Marantz Imperial 7

I just wanted to say that my dad has 2 Marantz Imperial 7 Speakers with the wooden stands in his garage. Most of the speakers are torn and he doesnt use anymore. For anyone on here from Maine these Speakers came from the former Lantons 4 nightclub.

I recently acquired a pair of Marantz Imperial 7 speakers and wanted to ask whether anyone could share a link to
the Crossover Network schematic for these speakers? Thank you in advance!
 
I have noticed that speakers with serial numbers below around 70000, tend to have the tweeter wired in phase (+ to +). Speakers between 70000 and 100000 tend to have the tweeter wired out of phase (- to + ). Speakers above around 100000 and a small 4J tag on the outside of the crossover, tend to have the tweeter wired in phase. There are exceptions to this. It looks like Marantz wasn't sure which way to wire the Imperial 7. This could be one reason why some people like them and others don't.

Hey, wanted to revive this thread briefly to see if there's anymore info about the 7's x/o's. I've got a pair that my brother bought new in the '70's with his Marantz 2230. Wanting to keep all this in the family so I'm having the 2230 refreshed by a fellow AK'er here but will need to do the Imperial upgrades myself. Seems like a fairly simple x/o but wondering if they can be improved since they weren't the Marantz 'rock stars' that the 6's, 8's or their HD lineup were. Any suggestions that might step up the 7's game a little? Thanks
 
I have 6's. They're staggeringly good for the time period, drivers used, etc.

The 7's, if they were mine, would be modded. Perhaps have someone punch in the t/s parameters of the drivers, and alter the box accordingly.

Or, sell after a refoam/refresh and try something else. Lots of options.

@onwardjames Not so many options up this way. Decent Vintage or modern speakers don't show up that often here. I am always on the lookout for them. Been fortunate to snag the finds I've gotten so far but have yet to see any Marantz Speakers on the market this far north. Alaska's a big state but all my finds have been between Anchorage & Fairbanks. Not a ton of audiophiles and those that truly are, tend to keep their gear longer and not flip them regularly. And I'm a hoarder, 12 pairs of speakers that I just can't part with yet. Haven't touched the 7's yet, wouldn't mind modding them within reason if there was a chance of some decent improvement. Hence, the search for those with any experience upgrading them. Thanks
 
I think the main problem was the crossover, and how the woofer/mids were walking all over each other.

Again, I'd see who might could pull some drivers, get some T/S parameters, and work out a better crossover.

That, to me, is the real problem.

Yes, that seems to be the general consensus of the 7’s in particular. A marketing driven product design that fell short. Great looking speakers so i feel it’s worth some effort to try and revitalize them.
 
Also, seems like someone, somewhere at sometime would have already done a Thiele/Small Parameter test on the 7's and have that data listed. Haven't found it yet.
