Marantz 24M

I just picked up a pair of Marantz 24M speakers, honestly, just because they have the Marantz name, not knowing anything about them.

I've not been able to find anything on the web about these specific speakers. I've read great praise about some Marantz speakers, and I've read that others are garbage.

Can anyone tell me anything about these specific speakers? They don't even have a wattage rating!

These are probably going back to the store for a refund unless someone can tell me they're worth keeping. I hooked them up to my Sherwood S-7200 and they've blown a speaker fuse twice now.
 
If you can post a picture of them, that would help. Marantz is not really known for their speakers, but there were some good ones back in the '60's (and possibly early '70's).

One way to get an idea is this: Are the cabinets heavy for their size, or are they on the lighter side? That would give you an indication on quality. If they're nice and heavy, then there's a chance they might sound good, but if they're easy to lift and the wood panels don't feel very-thick, then likely they won't. Marantz did make some good speakers early on, but they also made a lot of crap speakers in the late '70's and early '80's (I know because I have a pair of God-awful RM100's that were included in the price when I bought my Wharfedale W60E's... The CL ad was for two pairs of speakers, but I was only there for the Wharfedales... I only took the Marantzes because the owner insisted). Those have been sitting in my garage collecting dust. I just haven't had the heart to chuck them yet.

My guess is that they're nothing special. Likely made overseas well-after the company was sold (I think I remember reading that they were sold to Audiovox, but I can't remember).

By the way, the S-7200 is a damn--fine unit. The early to mid '70's Sherwood amps and receivers have a really-nice, tubelike sound, and even the low-powered ones are very-well-built and sound awesome. Hang onto that thing. That would go very-well with a nice pair of efficient speakers. It would sound great with my W90's, which are efficient-enough and also do very-well with a tube-like solid-state amp/receiver. W60's and W70's would be equally-good with it.

They're pretty light. The fabric is a dark brown and flat, all the cones and foam are in good shape, but like I said, I've blown two fuses with them, and barely got any sound out of them before they blew.

I'm guessing by the number, 24M, that these were put out after the quality of the speakers had taken a nosedive. Too bad. I thought I got a steal.

As for the Sherwood, I'd like to keep it, but I've been buying from thrift stores for the purpose of re-selling and I doubt my wife'll let me keep this one unless I sell something else. I do have a Yamaha A-45 and T-33 set up I've had for years I could swap out. Some sentimental value there though, as it was my first stereo system, and I still use it.
 
i had a pair for a brief while and gave them to a cousin who had nothing. nothing like the imperial days imho.

Yep, that's them. I took 'em back today. I don't know why they kept popping the fuse, but apparently not worth taking apart to fix.
