Yes the 2270 was made in Japan.... That is what I meant that I would be waiting in the trash when you decide to throw one out.... I love my 2270, owned it for 27 years now..... There are plenty of great world class Japanese Marantz....
You are right about the cost being higher for the US SS units and there is in deed a reason they tend to cost more..... but it is not because they are a rare pieces of junk..... even a one off piece of junk does not command more value....
As some one mentioned earlier the US Military played a huge role in the quality/development of Electronics on a GLOBAL basis .... One reason Marantz moved to Japan was that almost all US based electronics capacity was being consumed by the US Military back in the Cold War. US Assembly & component prices climbed.... All the good stuff was being sucked by the Military.
Sid Smith was US military trained in electronics.... Come on guys read your history....
Here's a list of NON TUBE US MADE SOLID STATE Marantz --- which I might miss a few...
Ever listen to these units in top condition? You should... And then go back & analyze the two construction/component styles used..... You might get a different impression.....

To compare the construction/components of any one of US SS Marantz units to a later Japanese equivalent is really not apples to apples...
Again, some really fine world class units made from both sides of Pacific. AND SOME NOT SO FINE ONES ON BOTH SIDES....
In the comment below.... you adding in price.... Well top of line in any field of human endeavor almost alway commands higher price... That is the world we live in....
All 2270s were made in Japan. And 2275s were considerably better receivers.
The old Marantz tube amps are a whole other story. Most of us will never see one in person, let alone afford one. May as well talk about the greatness of original McIntosh MI-350s or Mc-3500s.
