Marantz Model 19

I recently purchased a Marantz Model 19, serial number 1014, on EBay. This is the oldest serial number I have seen of the model 19, it being the 14th model 19 produced by Marantz. Pictures are below. Pleas note that it does not have the "Custom Calibrated" emblem on the faceplate, and it does not say "made in USA" on the blue placard on the rear of the unit. Functionally, it has audio output and the scope works, but the FM does not wok. I will be looking into this issue shortly. one note - initially, the scope also did not work. I replaced both 12 volt zener diodes on the power supply board, and the scope now works.

Congrats on getting the 19 its a great sounding receiver. its good you got the scope working those tubes are rare and pricey. The models that have fifty rms fifty on the front are the earliest models and most likely made in USA. Mine is most likely the Japanese model as the serial number is 4004 but it says made in USA on the back label. i dont know at what serial number they started assembling them in Japan or why some say made in USA and some dont though.

I think that the 19's without the custom calibrated badge were sold for $50 less. At least that's what I read. Supposedly the dial was custom drilled and the unit received extra calibration. This may be 100% internet rumor.

In any case, one without the custom calibrated badge is quite rare.
 
I have worked on exactly one of these and it had the Custom Calibrated text. The holes were indeed not exactly on the numbered lines.
 
I have one that is awesome!. Originally had the "tuner not working" problem. John from instrument resources got it working after I had sent it two other places locally with no luck. I am not sure if John is still a member here but he had all of the transistor cross problems worked out. You will notice that many of the components (esp. semiconductors) in the 19 have Marantz part numbers and not easily cross referenced. There are some good threads on here for power supply rebuilds.

Thanks!!! i have never seen a Model 19 with a serial number over 3700. Yours may be one of the last ones made. It is a great recsiver.

Yes, the dials on each individula unit were "custom drilled" by a computer, which was something back in 1970 - 75.

I have actually worked with John in the past. I sold him some Marantz 18 and 19 parts about 4 years ago. He really knows his stuff.

the "holes are drilled" on each individual model 19 with a computer. they appear as brighter dots immediately below the blue station numbers. When the model 19 was aligned properly, these dots showed the actual location on the FM dial. so if you dialed 98.0 FM, that is exactly where 98.0 FM is.

Congrats on getting a 19! Mine will never be leaving. If you have any kind of decent FM stations around, the FM is worth sorting out!

I actually have 9 model 19's with one being a "parts" unit. of the 9, only one was in perfect working condition when i purchased it. I have had to work on all of the others to get them working
 
Good news!!! I was able get my Marantz model 19, serial number 1014, up and running earlier today. The tuner was not operating, so I was able to get a replacement tuner, and the FM works perfectly. The right channel was totally silent when I powered up the 19, and I diagnosed the problem to a wire from the tone board to the volume board (phono amp) board. I repaired the wire, and the right channel worked perfectly. The left channel worked, but the volume was low. I replaced all 9 of the transistors on the board as a precaution, and it now works perfectly. I plan on diagnosing and repairing the tuner that does not operate because it was aligned with this unit.
 
I thought I owned an early example with serial number 1163 but you just won by a long shot, 1014, impressive! Supposedly that makes it the 14th unit off the production line.
