Marantz Model 600 Speaker Update

Marantz Owner
Just an update on a thread i posted in 2012. These are the Model 600 focus field speakers made by Marantz. After years of searching i managed to accumulate some original Marantz information. The brochure is from 1980. They did not make a model 800 with a 12" bass. Some thought that since Marantz always had a 12" woofer on nearly all their top end speakers that the next size up from the Model 600 would be the Model 800. These, and the M16's, are probably the best sounding Marantz speakers ever made. I say that because i also also own the DS-940 and HD-880's. The specs on the Model 600 and M16 are superior to the DS-949 and HD-880 and the magnets are much heavier. Anyone who has heard these two speakers (600/M16) at my home constantly state they are among the best sounding speakers they have ever heard. They (Model 600) were the last or next to last design by Edmond May. The M line (M16, M10) i believe were made later in 1980 or possibly 1981. Both had great looking glass tops on the speakers as well. FYI, the wood grain on the grills of the Model 600 are speaker cloth, not wood.

If anyone has any more original Marantz info on these two extremely rare speakers (model 600 & M16) please share. I have no firm information what these cost new but i am going to guess defn, over $1,000 due to the quality and design. Again, they sound incredible. I also had audio grade capacitors put on all of my speakers so they truly sound like new or probably better.IMG_4329.jpg IMG_4332.JPG IMG_4330.jpg IMG_4331.jpg

So were the m400/m600’s made before or after my m10’s? The speaker in the middle of the three pictured looks like mine. Are they the same?

Probably after or even in the same year. Spec wise guessing the same. Search right here on Audiokarma, might find some info. Both lines are exceptional!

Sorry to revive an old thread, I actually found a pair of these speakers in a thrift shop that I manage to get for 50$ Cad, found that they sounded faded and when watching movie I have to play with the volume constantly. Wanted to know if I replaced the capacitors if it would help and if so which ones should I use. Thank you

Congrats on your find. What state are u in? My guy restored them is in Vermont. If you plan on keeping them find someone who can look at them and evaluate them. If u don’t plan on keeping them contact me first!!

First of all thank you so much for replying!
I'm in Quebec Canada, I'm actually an audiophile, maybe not as experience as you guys since I'm still in my 20s, I was using them in my home theater paired them with my paradigm, since I only got the front towers (the 4 way ones) and I just replaced my amp with a Sony STRDH790 not sure if I can find someone that can restore them properly in Quebec everywhere I went and showed them the picture of the crossover I've been tol dam that's old haven't seen that in a while you might as well upgrade speakers. I was like euh... No thank you so I was wondering if I would just do it myself.
Ps If I do get rid of them I will contact you first

Would you happen to have a PDF of the service manual?

That would be awesome!

There was recently a thread in dollars and cents on the 600’s. He said he received all the original paperwork with them. I tried to get him to post them here. Also said they came with manuals for the M-10’s. Maybe another request to post them might help get more info out there? I have the M-16’s that there seems to be even less info on. Always looking. I have had my eye out for a set of 600’s to go with them for some time. Congratulations I am envious.

Very rare. Finding the sales brochure on the 600’s was a lucky catch. I own the M 16’s and 2 sets of DS-940’s. Also have owned the HD-880’s. These lines are under rated. Not just my opinion but just about every person that has heard them at my house (customers, not friends trying to be nice!).

Thank you I just can't wait to have the restored I'm thinking about doing it myself since i want it done right and a place I contacted wanted 450 to do it and im not even sure what parts they're going to use.
I was thinking about rebuilding a whole new board and simply connecting the wires to it.

Sorry, after posting on D&S I forgot to upload pictures of the M10 and Model 600 manuals. The literature is light on content, with one side fold out in English and the same content in French on the back. Here are a few pics.

Was visiting a friend in Indianapolis and saw them in Craigslist ad. They barely fit in my car but was able to get them back to Kansas City. I have several vintage speakers but I don't think I'll likely let these go, really like the way they sound (and look!).
