Marantz Model 6300 Color Problem

Hello everybody,

A few days ago I managed to get a long awaited Marantz 6300 turntable.
She had a few problems:
- could not maintain speed;
- strobe light is gone;

These are minor problems - cleaned the pots and switches, lubed the dry motor spindle and recapped her and now she maintains 33,33 and 45 RPMs.

For the strobe I will order a neon bulb from Mouser.

BUT

The Biggest problem is

The previous owner sprayed the plinth with grey spray!?!?!

I somehow do not like the current look...
How to deal with this issue?
What first comes to my mind is re veneer, but I have never done it before.
Or maybe try to sand away the spray paint?

What do you guys think?

How to proceed - any advice is welcome!

They did have a silver edition but yours definitely looks like a so-so paint job over wood veneer. The ones on eBay are really not in that bad of shape or you could sand yours down and do new veneer.

Thanks guys!

This is a new idea, I will definitely check options on e-bay.
Reg the reveneer, I would rather do it myself - just for the fun of doing it and for the challenge.

Will come up with updates after the holidays - I will be away for some time.

Happy holidays!

I think if you re veneer you'll be happy. I did mine a couple years ago and it worked out ok. Not too difficult.

Do you want to disassemble the table?

That is the only true way of fixing this issue. Strip the paint off with chemicals and see whats what, then move on to a solution. My bet is the wood veneer was in poor shape but could may well be wrong.

Once the plinth is exposed in all it's glory painting a color like black may be the answer. Or since you have the parts exposed then getting another plinth in wood veneer seems to be another avenue.

On the strobe check the resistor need for any replacement I can't recall right now just seen to remember there was a change when I did mine.

Thanks!
This will be my first project for the new year.
Regarding the resistor - I have the European model (though its the same as the US model here) and the schematic said 10K 1/2W. But what is interesting to me is the strobe bulb - there is no info in the RM - so reading around I found this Mouser part No 606-C2A. Is this the correct one?
Thanks in advance and Happy holidays!

Just scrolled down to specs and a 47K resistor IIRC is what I ended up using. I have a resistor sub box that was used to find what worked the best.

The old lamp is a tricky one to remove. Pulling it out from the bottom took some careful effort.
