Not to mention the tube gear:

I had a Maeantz model 18 receiver; it was very nice at that time; I very much liked owning it/ Later, I wanted the Marantz model 19, but it was about $1200 new in 1978, so, I could not afford it. Later, I had a model 15 which was two coupled 14 mono amplifiers on a single face plate. I was doing some bi-amping with the 15 on the woofers. Later, about five years, I purchased a model 19 and the model 16 power amplifier, which if memory serves me right, they had the same power amp? I read where some say the model 19 was 100 watts, but that is simply wrong; I remember it was 60 watts a channel and that was real power at the time. Foe awhile, I had the model 19 bi-amped with the model 16.

I was not really all that knowledgeable about audio then, but I did work for Pacific Stereo until I went to work for Infinity.

The model had the pre-am[ out and power amp in, so, it was easy to bi-amp with an electric crossover; I had a Luxman crossover then. My sound system was very nice, but I liked the meters on the later model; 250, which was not made near as well as the model 14, 13, 16 and 19, but it had 125 watts and those blue meters.

I wish I would have kept the model 19, even if I did not use it. The deal was, all the new higher power gear, had me selling off Marantz before it became so valuable.

:lurk:

I also had the model 15, brute of a unit, very solid, heavy, and within its power range, very robust and good sounding. Also wished I hadn't sold it.

The 18 was my first vintage receiver I bought about 8 yrs ago that (I had no idea at the time) was to become the start of a collection. A 19 came my way soon after. I had bought a brand new one back in 1971 so it was great to get another one in pretty mint condition some 40 yrs later.

A couple of stats:

The 19 is rated at 50 wpc.
The first ones said "fifty rms fifty" on the front face.
Soon after, it said "Custom Calibrated" in the same place.

Here is a picture of mine.

Very pretty! Probably the best receiver Marantz ever made, especially considering the supurb tuner section (20B) and the generally great build quality.:thmbsp:

I never get tired of those pictures Onemug. They do the 18 and 19 proud. I feel very fortunate to have my 19 and highly recommend one to anyone who can find one. Mine is the most powerful 50 watts I have ever heard!

Thanks Dave. I enjoy doing the pictures. I just use an iPhone but they come out pretty good.

The 19 is special. I listen to FM a lot and the 19's "package" makes listening to it a pleasure.

Yes, the model 19 was really something special in its day, 50 watts? Then maybe it was the same as the model 15? Some say the model 15 sounded better, all I remember is my model 16 was rated, 60 watts.

Anyway, the model 19 receiver is a real keeper. Sometimes I wish I kept the model 19, but then, had I not sold, I would live in a stereo store.

I did keep a model 8B for many years, but sold the model 7; they were my father's gear.

I am listening to a 15 that I just refurbed for someone... They are so sweet. I have a 15 also.... I really can't say that I would pick my tube amp over it...

I was doing back to back testing between the 15 and 8b clone..... Hmmmmm Its hard ignore how easy the 15 is to live with.... It has a built in 10 sec delayed on with no relays.... It's hard to make a mistake with....

The circuit is so straight forward and compact.... The feedback loop is so simple.... There is a lot to be said about simplicity...

Jk

I use a 16 in my main system. Its used every day. My wife gets up earlier than me and turns the stereo on, so I wake up to it every morning. :music: If I were to get a receiver the 18 or 19 would be my choice.

all I remember is my model 16 was rated, 60 watts.

Not picking on your memory :D but for the sake of accuracy for anyone doing a search on this model...

Model 16 says "eighty rms eighty" on the front faceplate.

Model 16b says "One hundred rms One hundred" on the front.

So, 80 wpc or 100 wpc depending on which model.

Both very sweet "early" ss amps. Both were true mono blocks bolted together using one faceplate. Each channel has it's own power cord.

There were 3 series of Model 16's. The original 16 "Eighty rms Eighty" was something of a disappointment after the 15, and was redesigned around S/N 1456, with an improved LM201 (vs. LH201) op amp and larger (6900uF vs.5500uF) power supply caps. The 16b "One Hundred rms One Hundred" used the same circuitry and output transistors as the original, but mated to an even larger power supply. I have a middle series 16 (s/n 2424) that bench test clips at 87 w/ch into a non-inductive 8 ohm dummy load. I've previously owned a 1030, 1060, 2230, and a 2325, and currently use the 16 as bottom-end in a bi-amp situation with a harman/kardon twin power 730, a very satisfactory arrangement.
