Marantz PM5004 vs vintage 1060, or....

Hey there,

I've just joined this forum but have been reading here obsessively for the past week.

How would a new Marantz PM5004 sound compared to a vintage integrated pre, such as the Marantz 1060 (or an HK A402, Kenwood 7300, or similar units)?

My current setup is Yamaha RX-397/Onkyo 7030 CD/Technics SL-QD22 w AT120/Polk Monitor 60s. CDs sound very good but vinyl does not, and I don't much care for the headphone amp on the RX-397. So I'm looking for something that will be a significant upgrade for vinyl and headphones over the Yamaha.

Never heard a Marantz PM5004 but I can only tell you from experience that the Marantz 1060 sounds awsome as I own one.

The PM5004 is a modern unit that has gotten excellent reviews. I hope to pick up a 2 yr old one for around $325. Hopefully I'll be able to buy a vintage 70s pre or reciever at some point in the not too distant future. My dream is to co-own a small cottage in the woods and put in a vintage system there - no internet or TV, just books, music, hikes, and relaxation.
