Marantz PMD-430 with headphones

I've stumbled across a few of these on ebay in great shape, and I've heard that they're absolutely incredible tape decks, even if you never use the record function. Three heads, really nice sound. However, I've also heard the phone jack on the front is atrocious. Is this true? I was hoping to run it on my desk at work as a little deck to run when I'm not at home. Would it be worth running the line out into a headphone amp or something? I'm thinking RCA to 1/8 converter, into a small but high quality headphone amp with a volume knob.

I've heard the line out on these machines is awesome. But maybe it works better into a stereo with speakers?

The PMD 430 is a TOTL portable recorder for sure. It will beat the pants off of many stand alone decks as well. I find the headphone jack fine for field recording. It also has a built in speaker for that no fi kind of sound. I think I would use the line outs and a headphone amp for the best sound quality. Enjoy the deck.

Love my PMD-430!!! Had it for 5-6 years now. Great portable and the equal of my Denons IMO.
I've used AKG-K240 headphones with mine, and the sound was very acceptable to my old ears..YMMV.
A headphone amp my do better.

Get yoursserviced, as the belts may be ready to go. Mine needs help at times to get going
