Marantz Restring scratch built

Well I wanted to refresh my tuner dial string because it was looking frayed and old. I also wanted to do it from scratch like I had nothing, I had a 2220B and all was missing. For around 5 bucks and a trip to Walmart I was all set to start.

Here is what I picked up:



Here are the parts I needed:



Cut the long piece:



Bend the end in the hook shape:





Bend out this piece and cut:



Here are your 2 parts you need:



Tie on the string:





Here is what it looks like:



Use heatshrink and hit it with a blow dryer so you do not ruin anything:



Now the real fun starts, string it up!

Almost need the patience of a watchmaker to do that stuff..well. as far a I'm concerned. Cool to know that the stuff to do it with is as close as a Wal-mart. Looking forward to the end product. Thanks for posting.
 
jstang... great link!! I was fotunate to have saved the old roll of dial cord I bought in the 70's when I needed some back then and was wondering if there was any out there. Vetty cool!! :thmbsp:

patfont... Very good info in case one needs to do a total replacement. I hope to see pics of the finished restringing. Also if it tightens up well enough for the tuner front end to operate properly. Sure hope so.
 
Back in the day, dial string was as common as dental floss.... Today... What's a dial string.....?

Besides home radios...every car made had it too..... Now a days....

This is a bit larger in diameter then stock, it tightens up excellent. In fact I was just doing a priliminary restring playing around, and am wondering if I should just leave it on, as it performs flawless. I just went around the gyro 2X the main hub 2X w/o spring. At the dial ends it slips at the gyro not the hub so no problem with coming out of alignment.
 
Received the dial string, and it looks to be as close to the original OEM as you could get. So I gave the 2245 a restring with it.

Thanks! I will say after you do it a couple times it is alot easier. Does anyone know what they used to lub the slid rail the pointer assembly rides on?
 
I tried to scratch build a tuning string. I went through every fishing line I could find - from WV to FL.

My problem to overcome was that "Stacking and Slip-over" with the string that was triple wrapped around the brass part - attached to the tuning wheel's center spindle.

I kept getting binding of string in that area. The original string material seems to retain it's round shape and not "Flatten out" causing the binding like fishing line does.

Patfont - did you find the beading cord worked well and not subject to binding?
Did you wax or lubricate the cord? Thanks for the good work & shared ingenuity!

Look at the pic in the top of post #12 and note how the cord is wrapped around top to bottom, when I did it like this it did not bind. The braiding cord from Walmart had no binding issues on the wheel either.
