Marantz Snubber vs. Safety Cap

I have an early (S/N 8796) model 1060. I have found conflicting information regarding replacement of the cap across the power switch. Presumably this issue also applies other Marantz amps and receivers of the period, but the cap references in this post are for a 1060.

My amp (and the 1060 schematic) has a 0.033uF PIO axial cap rated at 800vAC, connected across (in parallel with) the power switch, but physically located at the back of the amp. In the 1060 this cap is C008. I understand that some Marantz units (perhaps later production than mine) use a 0.1uf +120ohm resistor as a "snubber", presumably this was a design change to supersede the 0.033 cap.

I have read several AK threads on this topic, but none seem to directly address the replacement (upgrade) of the cap with a snubber (cap/resistor combo).

Is the snubber the correct replacement for units with just the cap?

I have also seen an X/Y safety cap wired across the switch. I guess this would work, but not as effective a snubber since there is no resistor. Also not sure that this is the intended use of a safety cap.

Looking for clarification.

I would go with a good snubber (RC Network) like the Quencharc 539-104M06QC150 from Mouser. I have used in several Marantz units over the years. You can also build your own if you want also with a X/Y safety cap and resistor in series.

Possibly, the original cap is fine in conjunction with the inductance of THAT particular transformer. Just a thought!

I agree with the RC snubber approach. However, the Quencharc snubbers are $17.50 each from Mouser, seems rather steep. I can make my own, just buy one of these for $3.00 from eBay (a seller who I think is an AKer). This seller is also a source of new power switches.

Since my post, I looked at the schematic for a 2275, which is from the next generation of Marantz gear from the 10X0/2230,45,70 series. The 2275 has a resistor/series cap snubber wired across the switch, no .033 cap, and uses two .01 caps (presumably safety rated) from the rectifier to ground. This seems like a good approach for the earlier 10X0/22XX series.
