Need More Info on Marantz SP-124 Speakers

Does anyone have detailed specs on the Marantz SP-124 speakers? What I do know is that they are 12" 3-way speakers with oak finish manufactured from 1987 to 1991. What is their frequency response, crossover frequencies, power handling (Min/Max RMS), sensitivity, dimensions, etc.? Is the oak finish genuine wood veneer, or simulated wood-grain vinyl? Are they acoustic suspension speakers, or ported bass-reflex speakers? Information on them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :music:

Since My Last Thread...

I have sold the Marantz Imperial 7 Speakers, and the Marantz 2240B and 2250B Stereophonic Receivers I had for sale. I am keeping the 1977 vintage Marantz system which is made up of a Model 2265 Stereophonic Receiver, a Model 5220 Stereo Cassette Deck, and Model 6200 Turntable, all in near mint condition. I am also keeping my pair of HD-770 Speakers, in which the drivers and crossovers were refurbished in 2007 by the original owner. The grills on them are excellent, but the cabinets could use some restoration.

Howdy, Wlmitch 1.......You are likely going to find that these are part of an all-in-one "rack" system........in other words, part of a package deal marketed by Marantz in the time frame you mentioned......

That may mean that specific info on the speaks may be hard to come by.........on the other hand (OTOH), we have a HUGE pool of collective knowledge here.... if the right person sees your post, all could be revealed to you.......

Patience, painful though it is, is essential......Welcome to AK, And I wish you well in your quest..........caution is advised before you shell out much dough for these.......they are unfortunately a Pig-in-a-poke .........willhowl:scratch2:

Thank you for your insight, willhowl. You are right. Patience IS a virtue when one is searching for older electronics. I actually purchased my 1977 vintage system one piece at a time during the latter half of 2009 on eBay, Craigslist, and Canuck Audio Mart.

I am looking for a pair of good quality, much later vintage speakers for the Marantz hi-fi components I purchased NEW in December 2008. My 1986-vintage SP-1200 speakers I am currently using with the 2008 system sound great, but they have that cheap wood-grain vinyl veneer finish. I purchased them NOS in March 2009 for $80 on Craigslist. Marantz components made since 2000 are nothing like the Marantz America (Dynascan) JUNK sold at Wards and KMart in the early 1990s. Today's Marantz components from their Hi-Fi Series and Reference Series lines have the same warm, clean sound and raw power that the 1970s vintage Marantz components have, but noticeably cleaner and more detailed. They are conservatively rated the same way and are just as sturdy. Their Reference Series components are built like tanks!

My PM7001 from 2008 is conservatively rated at 70 watts continuous RMS/Channel X 2 @ 8 ohms, 100 watts continuous RMS/Channel X 2 @ 4 ohms, from 20Hz-20kHz @ < 0.02% THD. Damping Factor: 100, Net Weight: 23.1 lbs. Set the volume to 9 o'clock position on the PM7001 and the sound fills the whole room, just like the 1970s! I enjoy both of my Marantz systems.

Good evening, everyone (EDT). Since my last thread, I obtained all of the specifications for the Marantz SP-124 speakers and posted them on http://www.audiocircuit.com after creating a data folder on them. They are about 37" tall with a 12" woofer, a 12" passive radiator, a 4" mid-range, and a 3" tweeter with a sealed acoustic suspension design. The cabinet has a simulated medium oak-grain vinyl finish. The frequency response is 25 Hz - 20,000 Hz with crossover points at 800 Hz and 2,300 Hz. The SP-124 is an 8-ohm speaker system with a minimum amplifier power rating of 10 watts RMS and a maximum amplifier power rating of 170 watts RMS. The sensitivity is 91dB @ 1 watt @ 1 meter. The grill cloth is black. I still do not know the exact dimensions or net weight of the Marantz SP-124. :music:

What type of fluid is used? Oil? Or is it something that degrades?
