Marantz "warm", "Colored" sound not "True" "Clear" sound? What?

Marantz in the true sense has had multiple owners through the years too. And makes mainly excellent gear (there was some Junk in Marantz for a while, especially when DynaScan owned them)

That's just it, they have a "Marantz Sound". I think all of the receivers had a house sound, even Yamaha's no-house-sound was a house-sound. My 2275 certainly had its own thing going on. A sort of colored, mid-rangey, fluff of niceness. I didn't care for it but I can see how it would be somebody's thing if they were into it. I liked that it had its own personality, even if I didn't care for it. Better than sterile.

Some of this is logically a bit hard to follow, because there are so many other things to consider.

As another member here (I forget who) has, repeatedly, patiently, and correctly pointed out, what is the condition of the equipment, some possibly FORTY-plus years old, you are using? And this is true for EVERY link in the chain from the source; tuner, phono, tape deck, CD player, computer (of whatever type), through the amplification process to the speakers, and also may include the cables and connections. Lord knows there are plenty of opinions about speakers! You also must consider the condition of and the "quality", "accuracy", or what have you of the source media, if there is one. Then, there are the acoustics of the room.

If we could then make it such that we all had perfectly healthy functioning ears, then in the end we are still left with what virtually unlimited combinations of all of the above we each like.

The only comparisons that make any sense is to keep every thing else the same, hopefully all in good shape, and then compare different brands/models of receivers/amps, again hopefully all in good shape to each other. (Note some like different models or "periods", e.g. early 1970's vs. later 1970's of the same brand.) Now, if you change anything, but probably speakers are the main thing, do you still prefer the same receiver/amp?

OR, we can just forget all that, most of which makes a lot of sense no matter what brand you prefer, and say that X brand, model Y is the best . . .

Personally, I think it is kind of cool there was a Greatest Generation guy named Saul Marantz who started a company. Yeah, my receiver was made in Japan, but it seems to have been built pretty well. It has been restored, pretty well I hope, as have my speakers, and sounds good to me with most sources. It sounds better to me than anything I have had up to now, but I know I could put together a system of entirely different brands and it would sound good too.

Marilyn Monroe or Jane Russell? Ginger or Mary Anne? In the end all I am sure of is Jaclyn Smith was the prettiest Charlie's Angel!

Very good points. I have noticed this "warm" sound moreso when playing records. The "warmness" of the records coupled with the Marantz sound enhances this sound.

I can never take these comparisons serious when they are made in the forum named after the unit...

If you want a more "uncolored" opinion this should be asked in the Vinitage SS forum.

All it is an invitation for non-fans of the forum brand (Marantz in this case) to post how they don't like the brand. I never jump into other brand forums to explain why I don't like the brand... Maybe I should start... And all I do in this forum is tell bad jokes in response to those who just want to rain on some one else's party.

Just can not take it serious when someone says "I once had a 40 year old unrestored unit and did not like it..." or when someone with another brands avatar says they do not like Marantz...come on....

It's still all in good fun...

Refurbed....? Every Marantz I know had no bass or treble at all...all mid range.

Most of these comparisons are left wing commie nonsense, we all know who won the cold war between Marantz and Fisher back in the 70s and was't because it lacked bass/treble, is Fisher still in business ...? :D

It's been Referbed and so has the Fisher. I guess the Fisher works best with my speakers and type of music. Because Fisher is out of business doesn't mean they where bad sounding. Don't get me wrong the Marantz is a nice unit, just not my cup of tea... I like the warmth of the tubes...

Thats the point....there are so many variables... One can also ask the question of the details of how well was it restored...not all refurbs are not created equal.

In the end it comes down to one's own tastes in sound... Provide the 40 year unit is indeed working correctly...

Top of a speaker is a bad place for microphonics.... :D

Seems alot of this convo surrounds Marantz receivers. But what about their separates? Their pre-amps, tuners, cassette decks, turntables and amps, how do they all rate on the scale?

my sansui 8080 is a little too bright for me. I prefer my 2245. Its nice and laid back, comfortable, and never offensive.
where as my sansui sometimes has too little bass and too much upper midrange for me to handle after midnight

I love my coloured, blanket over speakers, Marantz sound. Considering most recordings are pretty poor I see no reason to have the most revealing, transparent, neutral system out there.

I agree...I had a very very expensive high end system and it sounded so sterile I couldn't stand it.

In our store we sold the following receiver lines in the 70's.

Marantz
Yamaha
Luxman
San-sewer

I would rate them as follows in sound quality:
(Of course this is only my opinion YMMV)

1. Marantz
2. Luxman
3. Yamaha
4. Sansui

Another salesman owned Pioneer and would often bring it in, I would put it at or near the top of this list, it was an SX-828.

Just shows how subjective this all is. I've owned receivers and/or other gear in good condition from all of those and would rate for sound quality:

1. Luxman (depending upon which gear)
2. Sansui (tied with Sony, again, depending)
3. Yamaha
4. Marantz
5. Pioneer

Not that this is right and yours is wrong. Its just that taste is subjective.

I had chance years ago to pick up a pair.... Should have. Would have.....

Original owner too...

Yes Apollo C-51
I know not the best place for a tube amp but I have no other place for it. I have some Isolation pads... I should use them.

Only difference was as a job we compared them all day every day against each other and with different speakers, and the result was the store consensus. On the other hand you carry different lines because people are drawn to a certain look or sound.

Sorry, I was assuming that I was using my ears and not yours. I've had enough gear here to turn it into a hi fi store, and it was all compared on my terms, repeatedly, and I heard what I heard and liked what I liked.

The largest sample size would be the world of audio enthusiasts, and there is no such consensus, even though as a whole they've been listening to this stuff for nearly 40 years. People still have their favorites, and none of them are wrong. Modern gear has less variance between brands but there's still no consensus, because people simply prefer different approaches and different sounds. Try to get a Mac guy to agree with a Naim guy, and then have them both agree with a Krell or Ayre or SET guy. I don't know why people argue between the brands. There's no right or wrong, because nobody has the same taste.

I went to buy a bedroom set I saw on Craig's list at this old couples house. When I walked in I immediately saw these and ask him about them. He said they where moving and he had them for sale at his garage sale for $500. Nobody took them. I offered him $300 and he took it. He worked for JBL and when he retired they gave him these. The lacquer was all crack on them so I stripped them and oiled them up and now there beautiful again... My lucky day...

I bought a 10b, 7t, SLT and a 15 from the original owner... They also had the C51s... But I past on them.... Such is life.

But 300$ for them was a killer deal....
