Marantz WC-22 wooden case- Would you buy?

I've been preparing a new business to make wooden decks. In the process, I have installed my vintage hifi system in my workshop and been rejuvenated back into vintage hifi; in paricular, Marantz receivers.

I have spent a lot of time on ebay looking at Marantz receivers. Wooden encased receivers seem to sell for more and occasionally WC-22 cases are sold separately, but they always seem beat in some way.

I'm trying to determine if there is a market for a reproduction of the Marantz WC-22 wooden case. So, would you be interested in buying an exact WC-22 reproduction and what would you be willing to pay for it? If there is enough interest I may add it to my product mix.

I would be interested if it looked identical to the original. I came across another maker of these but they appear to have different angles on the front surround. Price would be dependent on materials. Would hope it would cost less than a used receiver.

I am looking for two right now. Around these parts an origional one goes for 100-150. Sometimes it is easier to buy a package deal with the receiver and case. I think there is a market for this if the price is right. Good Luck!
 
There are reproductions on E-bay from time to time. They look good to me.

I would buy one if it looked right. $150 maybe.

I had planned to build a few, but I may be interested if made with a 9 ply furniture substrate with walnut nosing.
100 bucks would probably be tops for me unless the finish was something extra special.

I'm a tight wad tho...........:D
 
I'd say there is definitely a market. I was looking a few months back and managed to get a nice original one for under $100, but most seemed to go for up to $150. I'd say there were at any one time typically 2-6 for sale. There's also an accessory category where folks list them.

I also looked at the WC-122, a couple of which came up while I was in the market. In some ways I like the look better. A pristine one in the Denver area sold for just over $200.

I also looked at lower end models with cases on, and almost bought a cheap 2216 or such just to get the case, but then I would have had a nekked 2216 to deal with.

FYI, you would not be the only vendor offering this product.
 
I'd buy a case for my 2230, but nothing extravagant. My system is in a second home and in my "man cave" and I'm the only one looking at it. Still, it would be neat to have.

I was thinking the same thing on making some for extra cash. In my research there is already someone building them.

I would like them built better than the original. Who would want particle board that has veneer glued on it?
These definitely are!
They are minimum $180 but by the price people are purchasing the WC-22 on eBay they are well worth it.
Veneers in Stock:
Black American Walnut, Premium Natural Cherry, Premium Med Red Cherry, Premium Figured Maple, Ribbon Stripe Mahogany

Premium & Exotics:
Walnut Burl Wood, Quilted Waterfall Bubinga, Red Maple Burl
 
Most people who say they want one or two and that they would buy really wont when it comes down to it. OR- they will, but not at a price that will allow you an acceptable margin when you factor in EVERYTHING. I know of at least two who have done these (and refurbished old ones) and they didnt retire on the profits, lol. (and no, it wasn't me....!)
 
Oh and the other issue is this: Enclosing these in wood tends to increase the internal temp to a level that I find unacceptable. I believe that is the primary reason for the higher failure rate of the lamp housing on the 2325- it was the top of the line, thus more likely to be purchased with the cabinet, thus more of them ran hotter, thus more housings melted. Just my theory, but I think it has quite a bit of truth....
 
Properly set-up as a production, at $150.00 each, these would be on the edge of worth it IMO. What do you need to make an hour? More time in these boxes, built right and finished beautifully, than it looks like.
 
I bought two reproductions from different vendors. Neither were very good. I bought a couple of originals which are much better than the repos. The originals do have some "character"?! I'm looking for a few more originals because the repos I bought are not as nice as originals.
I believe there is a market for sure.

Did anyone ever find a reproduction case supplier?
The one in the link provided wants close to $350 for a Marantz wc22.

Pathe (in Germany) is $300+

There used to be Black Swamp Audio but I don't see their website as being active anymore.

Bob, I just bought this really beautiful and well built WC-22 repro from a builder in Missouri. I paid $165 plus shipping, and it is eye popping. It came perfectly packed with the inner packing being a felt bag. I will be buying more from him.
