Marantz Wooden Cases Black?

Never heard of or seen a factory black WC-22. That packing job scares me to death though. That poor 2240 is going to take a beating whenever he sells it.

I agree, Ihave never seen a Marantz wc22 in black. It looks to me that it's a crappy paint job.

Totally agree, I messaged him through Ebay and he said I was an idiot that I didn't know about the "special" case Marantz made. He said he even had a brochure picturing it on the cover...Even if they did make this special black case I agree with you it looks like a bad Krylon $2.99 Walmart paint job.
 
I think we all agree that it has been painted recently , but how can it be 100% OEM without a screen on case .

I also messaged him about the packing job, and hopefully he will take it to heart. But, I guess the good thing is that his asking price is somewhat high, and most likely wont sell, but then I think we have all seen items on ebay selling for more than what they are normally worth.
 
He might be confused when marantz manufactured a black vinyl case (not a cab) on some of the later 70's receivers.
 
There are original black wood cases, that were meant for the black face Marantz 20/22/23xx receivers. But these might not have been released at all in North America? I haven't seen them get mentioned much on this site. They were very common in Europe.

Also, some of the Superscope receivers had black wooden enclosures.
 
I've seen a couple of black Marantz cases, and I own one.

At first, I thought this was a rare option that Marantz had offered, but after carefully examining mine some time after I got it, I concluded that this was an after-market re-spray job. Absolutely no doubt in my mind that it started out as a regular/genuine Marantz wood-veneered case, and was subsequently sprayed black. It's POSSIBLE Marantz did this, perhaps at a customer's request, but I'm inclined to think it was done locally, perhaps by an owner or perhaps by a dealer. I'm not saying that Marantz couldn't have done this originally, but I THINK it was a customer's after-market choice, not original.

That said, I find it gives a very different and attractive look to the black-dial (or black-faced) Marantz units. I kept an extra 2275 JUST in order to enjoy that black-dial-in-black-case look.

I've toyed with the idea of refinishing the current semi-glossy black woodgrain look (similar to the Yamaha black wood things) as a really smooth/shiny "piano black" finish, but haven't got around to it; not sure if I should. Maybe that would best be left for a reproduction cabinet?
 
Out of all the Marantz i have owned... And the hundreds ive looked at wanting to buy I have never seen a black cab..

I had my buddy who is a professional painter at one of the local car auctions paint my woodcase for my 2285B. Echowars did a great job and I was pleased with the results. :thmbsp:

Marantz never sold black wooded cases in North America , ever .. Doubt they did in Europe either but can't say for sure , never been there :smoke:
 
I have been wanting to make a case for my 2275 and the black one that orionkc has pictured looks really cool.I have been a wood worker for 30 years and a buddy or mine showed me how to make something he called black oak.If I remember right he soaked a large piece of steel wool in apint of vinegar for a day or so.Then brushed the strained vinegar on to unfinished oak and it caused this strange reaction.It's something in the oak reacting with the vinegar.You had to do several coats and let it dry for a day or so He topped it off with a couple coats of polyurethane .I never thought about doing it to a oak receiver case but maybe now I will.

Perfect for those times when you want to play a little Black Oak Arkansas, I suppose. Of course, If I made a wooden oak case and blackened it that way, then it would have to be Black Oak Arkaycansaw. :D

Sorry to bump a an old thread, but that black case is gorgeous. If you don't mind me asking, did you use high gloss black? Would like to paint mine similar to yours.
 
Well, since this thread got bumped . . . That 2285B looks nice!

Arkay, have you ever posted a pic of the 2275 in black. I thought I had seen it, but I couldn't find it. I was thinking it would be a contender in the "best looking receiver thread." I think the Scott would take the prize, but that 2275 in black would place high.

I have also seen a European black 2265B in "regular" wood, and the contrast was rather stunning. I would like to see one of the "all black" such as a black 2226 in both black and in regular wood. I bet they would both be pretty.
