Found these sitting on the shelf at a local thrift. Like many here I have way too many speakers but they looked interesting and appeared well-built. Appeared to have all the original drivers.

Got them home and after cleaning the L-pads up I hooked them up to my Kenwood KR-7400. Initial impressions are very favorable. Searching AK it looks like the designers son is a member here. Pretty cool!!

Anyone have any experience with these that can tell me their specs and when they were made??

Send Mike a PM. He's a nice guy and will be happy to hear from you.

You are dead on regarding Mike. He has already responded to all of my e-mails. He even confirmed that he was the MM who signed of on the speaker inspection card on the back of these speakers. He said these are from around 1977.

I have played a variety of music on them and very impressed. They hit the lows very well on Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" CD. Hit the highs very well on a David Sanborn CD. Continue to be impressed with them. I think they are the very definition of "sleepers".

Vintage Martin Gamma 208 1977

Hi guys,

Thanks always for the kind words and I love to see people find the great deals on Vintage stuff at sales (I do it too) but Scott these are the original woofers (cloth surround) I spoke about and not made anymore! Foam probably would have rotted by now as we tried to keep from using them but some old Magnificats (12's) and 312's (12's) sometimes had them!

How's it going Mike? Are you working on any interesting speaker designs?

Yes sir my friend, I am making a crazy 206 with the tweeter in the top back (reflecting off the wall) and a port in the front top where the tweeeter was! My daughter grabbed them and has them in her room listening to the Fab 4 always on them now! Hope all is well and you and the my other AK friends! I am trying to do more on AK instead of the French Hi-Fi forums but they are saturated with Martin Enceintes (Martin surrounding walls) in France with technical questions in French! OMG!

That's awesome... How cool is it to find a pair of old vintage speakers and end up talking to the guy who personally-inspected them and initialed the back of each one? That's the way I felt while talking to the guy who designed/built my DAC.

Very cool indeed!!

I have been listening to these pretty regularly since I got them and just can't wipe the grin off of my face.

If anyone reading this thread ever comes across these speakers or its kin you need to do yourself a favor and grab them!!

Here they are for you to checkout my friend Cubdog and sorry for the delay! Not sure I will do much but listen to them, they seem to project highs all over the room! (My Daughter snatched them)!

Those are cool! I've always been one to stick with good ol' box-speakers with the drivers on the front, but I've been reading about some of the speakers out there with rear-firing or upwards-firing tweeters and that sort of thing (I'm a big Wharfedale fan, and they made several models back in the day that had upwards-firing tweeters and were meant to be placed near a wall). I've definitely come around on ported designs too.

Thanks much my AK friend! Incredible how the love for music can bring people together! They can keep up with my 60's Micro Max a (208) 2-way 8 inch woofer they are sitting on!

Old thread but amazing! I just went to a guys house to buy a couple of vintage receivers he was selling on Craigslist. He's moving - boxes everywhere. He demo'd the amps with this pair of speakers in his living room and then he said "want the speakers? I'll throw them in for free". Free is good so I said yes.

They're Martin Gamma 208's. MM initials on the back and all. I Googled them when I got home and found this thread.

I can't wait to test them more but my initial impression is they sound great.

Congrats! I think you will be very happy with them!!

I just saw a pair of these at my local thrift. I would have bought them had they been in better condition. They were pretty trashed. :(

Reviving an OLD thread....I just happened to find a pair of these. They are in need of new tweeters.

Anyone know of replacements?
Thanks!

Hello all! I don't really care on old or how long does this thread been "frozen" someone might find this information useful.

I recently got my hands on a pair of this lovely speakers that were on a very bad shape (I've seen them in a bad state about 10yrs ago...)

I needed to replace the foam surrounds, the tweeter pot is not helping out. the 6uF crossover capacitor measures perfect but has corrosion marks. I can't really make up if its leaking.

little did I know, a lot of moisture got a hold on those woofers. even one screw terminals was completely isolated. when I got to work on the foam surrounds, both voice coils were corroded solid onto the magnet assembly... the magnet was also badly corroded and separating: made the job longer but easier to clean. I don't really know how but I did make the woofer reconstruction possible, cleaned the tweeter pot and finally had a listen to one speaker (one half way finished)

I love them now. I have a few speakers... modern and classic. these ones sound confy.

I'm posting pictures on the work that I've done. I wont make a how to since I could have made better moves on this.

the only foam surrounds that I found (similar to the original ones) don't look as "clean" but I rather have them working.
I've had to dismantle the spider from the basked. that was the worst part. had to use heat and a scraper tool. after all parts were free had a 4H cleanup job of everything.

then, redo all parts, with blood, no seat and no tears (the woofers work!)

so: Don't give up on old equipment. now: I'm hunting for new pots and maybe capacitors just to be safe about it.

(Edit: Typo, smelling glue did not help)
