I passed by a community thrifty in a small city and saw a pair of Martin Micro Max speakers made by a company in New Jersey, NY. Speakers look very solidly made. The front grill is firmly fixed. I have no way to check the drivers. A quick check on internet shows that speakers are made in 70s and sold most of them to Europe. I decided to take them home. I have been listened to them on and off for a few days and really like them. They have a distictive sweet sound, tight bass with nice clarity. These speakers have good definition at high frequencies, not like most speakers in same era that tend to roll off at high end. I walked into a local high end audio store today and listened to a pair of Focal Sopra No. 1. I was dissapointed with sound compared to Martins. The bass is bloated and muddy although female vocal is bit better than Martin. Overall Martin is more balanced to my ears than Sopra (at $13,500/pair!). I think I will these speakers will replace my Celestion SL6 as Martin is much easier to drive. Attached is the picture (not mine, found on net). The company is still making and selling the same speakers under name Gamma 208.
