Matcing cassette deck and tuner for marantz 3800 and 510m

Hello Folks,

I have a Marantz 3800 preamplifier and a Marantz 510m power amplifier. I love these two components.
I really want to complete the set. Id love to get a tuner and a tapedeck. I still use cassettes. actually more so than the FM :/

Marantz had about 3 or 4 different size profiles for component widths. like the Marantz 1060 integrated was the smallest about 14.5 inches. the 510M was next at about 15.5 inches. I think the 22 model families were 16.5 inches and the 44 model quads were about 17.5 inches. I don't know for sure. BUT what I would like to know is which tape decks (if any) matched the 510M in profile width. id like to make a nice neat stack. I know the 150 tuner would fit. (I think) but I cant quite find a cassette deck that was manufactured to that form factor.

was there ever any?

looking forward to some comments :P

PS they don't have to be from the exact family just the profile (bonus if theres analog vu meters). for instance I don't think the 3800 was even the specified match for the 510m. I think it was the 3600. but I cant find one where I live. the 3800 and even a 3300 that I have fit on top of the 510m.

Your faceplate is 6 X 15.5. I looked at a list of all vintage Marantz decks and couldn't find any silver face models less than 17" wide. After the 70's, their deck profiles dropped considerably and were less than 15.5" wide. I may have missed something, but couldn't find a 15.5" wide model. If you want to check a little closer, go to hifiengine.com (free signup). Go to Library and select Marantz from manufacturer list. Then select Cassette Decks. Select any deck and on the first page will be dimensions. Some of them are in mm, so divide by 25.4 to get inches.

Bryan is correct, I have a 3800 and the 120B, 125, and 150 match, the 120 is the same size but has the small screws, not the face bolts. My is currently running with a 250 and 120 tuner, I have not been able to find a Marantz cassette. The smallest I have width wise is an SD-6000 which is 16.5 inches and a golden face, most of the silver faced are 17.5 inches. If you find something that looks nice, please post it, as I would like something that matches also. Thanks Rich

Nice gear!!

I was waiting in a doctors office today and checked every Marantz deck on the list. Most were 16-1/2" wide and some were 17-3/8". A few later small footprint models were under 15", but I found none at 15-1/2".

Hi Everyone,

Thanks a lot for your feedback. Sadly I also cannot find a deck that matches the footprint of the 3800 and the 510m. I don't think one was ever manufactured to be stacked with these units.

Indeed, Marantz is not necessarily the best sounding regarding the cassette decks, however, they ARE arguably the some of the most attractive. (before they changed to black plastic at least). I do try to collect vintage gear. I have some other decks including Yamaha, Teac, Akai, Aiwa, a 90's Sansui (not quite vintage) and even an Akai reel to reel player. I would most likely get better joy out of those components than a Marantz deck. The goal here is to complete the set for aesthetic purposes more than to operate in a main system. The 510m and 3800 are actually not my main system.

I live in South Africa. vintage gear in general (Never mind Marantz) is quite hard to come by. I have resorted to importing gear. The most common entities are the pioneer rondo receivers. lots of lighter, cheaper less sought after gear made it here like Blaupunkt, Sharp, Philips, Telefunken etc. (nothing wrong with these. In fact I have collected some)

Analogue VU meters (not belonging to cassette decks) are somewhere between roosters teeth and unobtainium. It took me donkeys years to find that 510M. The collectors community is fairly small and people rarely let go of their gear.

I wish you'd gotten an answer (although I knew there wasn't one). Here's an idea: buy a 5220 and a 6300 (they're about the same width), and stack them next to your other separates :)

Not a bad idea. The OP showed an interest in the big VU meters, and I don't think they get any bigger or better looking than the 5020 and 5220.
