No, the stereo won’t break the crystal...Oh CRAP!
As with all of us - age is not kind over the long term, to basic speaker materials such as paper cones and surrounds. I’ve run into sun bleached paper cones on one speaker (of a pair), knowing that it does not have the same general integrity as it’s peer (that did not have the same exposure).
Question - what methods have been successfully used out there to restore the paper cone materials to their original composure, without adversely impacting the original characteristics and/or intended (engineered) characteristics? When repairing a damaged paper cone driver with a patch, I have often coated the rest of the driver in a watered down mixture of white (flexible) fabric glue, in order to improve the overall (consistent look and integrity) of the now patched driver, trying to make the patch invisible.
What have others done (successfully) to shore up old/degrading paper cone materials, without adversely impacting the originally designed characteristics of the material (i.e. if you stiffen up the material beyond original specs, it’s bound to change the characteristics of the driver’s output). Anyone done any before and after output testing on this (on test equipment)? Also, what do the pros do, who restore vintage drivers for a living, in this regard?
I’ve also purchased some basic soy-based black ink, with the thought of applying it to a few of my vintage drivers, to bring them back aesthetically, to a newer (restored) look. I don’t think the ink would have much impact on the material characteristics (which is why I chose it) but am looking for opinions/ideas in this regard as well.
