May buy a pair of EPI A120 speakers.....

I spoke with the owner and will meet him after work to take a look at them. If they are as advertised, I'll take them home with me. Soon as I can, I will post some pictures. Meanwhile, what can I expect from these? I did a quick AK search and understand that the consensus opinion is positive.

Here is what I came away with....

I spoke with the owner, a nice young musician who had received these speakers from friends of his parents for free. His wife didn't like their size or their sound, so he put 'em up on CL.

He described the cabinets and grills correctly, very nice, no damage. He also verified that all of the drivers were in good shape too, and that the foam surrounds on the woofers looked new. I got a little tickle in the back of my brain at that time, but I was in a hurry to get out of work, check these babies out and beat it to the house.

I met him in a Kroger parking lot, he opened the hatchback on his Honda, revealing some beautiful cabinets. I transfered one to the tailgate, removed the pristine grill from the first cabinet and experienced mixed emotions. Yes, there is the lovely Epi tweeter, but what is that Jensen car speaker doing in the woofer hole? Removing the grill from the other cabinet revealed some off brand woofer residing there.

I offered him much less than his asking price, which he accepted. He was embarrassed, and I assured him that there is still some value there .

I'm not real sure what I'm gonna do with these. I am open to suggestions. Here are some pictures:

Check out the HUMAN speakers website. You might be able to buy replacement woofers there. I say maybe because some of the woofers on the site require a return of the old woofer for rebuild. Good luck. I recently scored a pair of Epicure 2.0's that sound very good.

Thanks for the tip! I read over the website very closely last night and you are correct; this particular driver is the Pro 018 10" and does require the core. I intend to call the owner and see if he can make an exception. In the event that I cannot find a suitable OEM driver, any suggestions for a modern replacement? Better yet, does anyone have the specs on this driver so I can research my own replacement?

Can't help on the specs of the woofer, but if I were you, I'd be patient and keep your eye out for original woofers. I picked up a pair several years ago on the cheap, refoamed them, and used them as primary speakers in my Las Vegas system for almost a year. I like these speaks a lot- get them up off the floor about a foot, and, depending on your listening position, angle them up a bit, and just enjoy. One of my sons has my pair now as his main speakers and enjoys them as much as I did.

I don't know if they're the correct wooger, but there's a pair online [ you know where ] right now reasonably priced. No affiliation, etc. etc.

EDIT: If Human Speakers will take "any" EPI core for credit, you can have the one bad 8" wooger from my T/E-100's sitting in my garage, tensleep. Just let me know what you find out.

Check out the closed EPI auctions on eBay as there was a guy last week selling a couple of those 10" woofers that didn't get his $0.99 open for them.

Maybe he still has them and could help you out??

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll have to follow up on the auction. The pair on the Dallas CL are actually the ones I know have - I bought 'em! I figure, worse case scenario, somebody around AK will have a need for the tweets, badges, grills, maybe even the cabinet. I could probably trade for some cool tunes or a digital source of some kind. In the meantime, I am watching a pair of 10" Epi woofers on the bay right now. They are high priced and need to be refoamed, so I may pass.

One question: Epi seems to have made two 10" drivers, the Pro 018 and Pro 019. Does anyone know what the difference is between them?

I believe one is a paper cone and the other lexan.

I have T/E 320s I'm using the woofers out of in a two way econowave setup, they are the lexan. They sound pretty good and I'm running them with no inductor. I refoamed mine and attached them to the front. They are a foam coated lexan and look pretty cool, although I think I'd prefer paper.

I might consider selling them as I plan on buying 4 10" daytons soon and building something with some barzillay cabinets I acquired.

They seem to go for $50+ on the bay, the 8" models included. Odd.

Heh, heh. I checked those out and those are the ones that I am currently watching (relisted). Let's just say they aren't so attractive at the moment:smoke:.

Interesting. Couldn't get $0.99 last week, now he's looking for $19.99.
Well, it does happen sometimes.
Email him an offer of $9.99 each and combined shipping in a week or so and see what happens.
I was looking for a replacement for my 500s, but those aren't exactly right, otherwise I would have snagged them both.

Probably should have anyway...

Good plan - I'll give it a shot, pending what Gordon finds out.

I've got an orphan A-120 in my garage. I've been wanting to find another tweeter so I could build a set of speakers using the tweets. PM me and we'll see what we can work out.

I picked up this pair of Epis off of CL earlier this summer. The cabinets, grills, tweeters and Lpad are all in great condition. However, someone had replaced the woofers with car speakers, mismatched at that!

I picked them up cheap anyway, not knowing how hard these woofers are to come by. By posting on Barter Town and bumping on occasion, a fellow AKer sold me a fresh pair of woofers and they arrived last week (thanks kretinus).

I had a little extra time today, so I loaded the woofers and put them into the home theater system in place of my JBL 4410 Studio Monitors. I am expecting delivery of some fresh capacitors this week. As these speakers break in, I will update this thread.

So far, the Epis, while not as accurate or detailed as my JBLs, they are very musical and pleasant speakers. They dig deep and have a wonderful clarity on top. They also are easier to blend with the rest of my components and speakers. Critical listening will come with time, especially after the caps are in and they have about 20 hours on them. I have them on top of my Klipsch at the moment - a bit high. I will come up with some type of speaker stands for critical listening. I have seen some Epis up on some type of wire frame stand. Does anyone have a closeup of these stands along with dimensions?

Gotta love EPI. Their stuff sure sounds good.

Those will really come alive after you recap them - EPI's stock caps are notorious for falling out of spec.

I got home last night and my wife was listening to Richard and Linda Thompson through the Epis - a very nice sounding pair of speakers. The tweeters are very clear without being too bright. I can hear S's and T's and P's and K's clearly. Tinkley sounds are tinkley and give a sense of space.

The Epis are currently hooked up to a JVC home theater receiver. They work very well as the front mains. I have the bottom end augmented by a subwoofer, but I don't need it much with the Epis. I have the sub crossed over at 80 hz. I believe I prefer the Epis to my JBLs in this role.

I intend to listen to the Epis driven by my Rotel at some point. The Rotel is hooked up to the horn stack of my Klipsch at the moment.
