MC-2100 questions

A friend of mine bought a Mac MC-2100 at an estate sale. He's not into audio much at all, he hunts records and has no desire to change the newer system he uses. I have his 2100 to try out and decide if I want to buy it from him.

First, cosmetically it is perfect (no exaggeration). Not a scratch on it and the chrome could not be better. But, it needs to be tested and I don't want to screw this thing up.

In my search of AK I read that a preamp is not necessary when using one input. Do I hook interconnects from a tuner or TT to the inputs on the 2100? Speakers, I assume, get hooked to the ohm screws that match them? Not sure I understand what the gain controls do, is it volume controls?

Anything else I need to know to give it a go? Thanks!

Gain control is a volume control if hooked up in the simple fashion you are going to use - just semantics. The output from most CD players and tuners is high enough to drive the 2100 to full power when you turn the gain pots up... Just hook up some speakers, use some fair to good RCA cables to tie the CD to the Amp, put the switch on the face of the 2100 to stereo, plug it in and enjoy.
 
Hooked up speakers and a receiver and not good news. Nothing worked. Checked the fuse and it was blown. Off to Radio Shack to buy more.

Wasn't sure if the fuse was already blown or blew when I plugged it in. Replaced the fuse, plugged it in and I heard the fuse go. Disconnected everything from the 2100 and tried it again. Fuse blew.

Any suggestions or is it off to our favorite repair shop?

Probably has a shorted output transistor and possibly the associated current sense transistor - shop time...
