Mc 2105 with Mx 110?

Hi,

Thinking about picking up a Mc 2105 to pair with my Mx 110.
Anyone tried this combo or care to comment?

Speakers are Klipsch Cornwall, so power should be more than adequate.

I've read good things about the 2105 but not too much about pairing it with a Mx 110. Most systems seem to have the more contemporary C 28 preamp.

My thanks in advance!

Yes, I have done it and it is a killer combo. The MX110 will give you the tube feel along with the MC2105 which has a tube-like signature and the results are sweet, smooth, and detailed. :)

Carl,

Thanks for the input-literally!
Geez, that's about all I need. :D When the right one comes around I think I'll go for it.

Thanks again!

With a bit less power I ran my MX110 and MC250 as a pair for several years, drove a pair of Bozak L300 Colonials, they were a perfect match.

Terry,

Good to hear.
Thanks to you we know my Mx 110 is sounding good!

Thoughts on how it will compare to a pair of MC 30's?

Paul

The MX110 and a pair of MC30's or 40's (bit tighter on the bass) is an original match up, it will have a VERY tube like sound that may be speaker sensitive, heavy on the bass for some speakers, but a perfect match for others like Klipsch where I would personally rate them as #1.

Yeah.

The MC30s with the MX110 is a KILLER combo. While the MC30 bass isn't quite as tight as the 40s or SS Macs, the midrange is truly one-of-a-kind......VERY "3-D". The tube rectified sweetness of the MC30 brings aspects to the table that no other amp can duplicate....even in the realm of Mac tubes. You really want Mac tubes vs. vintage Mac SS because tubes give a "grain-free" (read: smooth) see-through presentation that the 250/2100/2105 etc don't quite reach - even though they are "tubish" in sound. The 250/2100/2105 are good "set it and forget it" options that get you 85% of the way there for much less $$$ than Mac tubes will cost you. The 30s stand alone when it comes to midrange though.....and the MX110 will mate very well with these. 30s done right don't come cheap - sourcing the amps, rebuilding/updating, then tubing them right might have you thinking of a boat (you know - a hole you throw money into). Once accomplished, however, I find the MC30s to simply be the "cat's meow" on Heritage Klipsch - so much so, I have two pairs  GOOD amps are the place where you can't get something for nothing - it really matters on those speakers.

Just about all McIntosh amplifers will sound good with the MX110 and your Klipsch - but the MC30 might be the best match of all - especially if midrange is your game - and for Klipsch users, that is very often the case. If you are a bit of a "bass head", then maybe not so much - think MC60s or MC275, which bring a bit more "heft" to the presentation (KT88 output tubes), while still bringing the benefits of smooooooooth tubes to the table.

It's hard to lose with ANY Mac amps. And if you buy and want to change, they hold resale value.

More good points, your music preferences?
Important to know your needs. I notice most Klipschheads are into mostly acoustic jazz and if that is your case too you may wish to jump into a pair of 30's right off. They are the most SET sounding PP amps I have heard.
OTOH, should you need large amount of headroom like me you would be in deep doo -doo. I can make my MC225 and MC30's cry like babies with 102db speakers depending on what I am in the mood for which varies a great deal.
Or, be like me and buy some of each and swap them around. :)

Carl

PS, Room size is also a critical factor.

Carl, Audible,

Thanks for your thoughts.

To make it clear I already have a pair of Mc 30's that I am very pleased with. I find I have plenty of bass, the only complaint(minor)being that it can be a little loose.

Music varies-jazz, rock/pop, classical. I think my speakers are more of a holdup musically, sounding good on most things while heavy rock is not their forte. No biggie with me as this is played the least.

Room size is 12' x 17' with the speakers shoehorned in on the short wall. Not ideal, but it's what I've got to work with-and am happy to do so.

I've just been curious about the earlier Mac SS and the 2105 seems like it would be a pretty flexible amp to own. The tube like sound with a solid bass/bottom is appealing to me. Plus, I could put it out in the rec room and drive my large advents! I'm in no rush, but if a nice 2105 comes across my bow... :D

Pun intended? :D

You would never be sorry you bought one to use.

Indeed! :p:

Allright, I've got my radar turned up a notch.
If anyone has a line...

I will try and be patient to find one in good condition, preferably with case.

Thanks again,
Paul

I use an MC250 in the warmer months (MC60's the rest of the year) with my Cornwalls. The 250 has more than enough power with the cornwalls and sounds very similar to the MC60's. I would consider the MC250 as well.

Kelsa,

Good to know.

I know the 2105 is a bit overkill power wise with the Cornwalls. I thought to get an additional fairly decent powered amp to handle a variety of speakers.

Appreciate you posting!
Paul :)
