MC 60's in the house!!

Congrats to Thunder and Don on a successful (and potentially life-threatening) mega-Mctrade! Now Thunder get your ass over here with those sweet thangs so we can try em on my L300's! :yes::music:
 
there are a few things worth risking your life for in this world-----those amps are probably on the list.
 
I had three pairs at once. I still cannot believe I sold ONE pair let alone all three. I honestly cannot say another amplifier gave me any more enjoyment.

Enjoy them. Don't be STUPID like me and ever sell them.
 
WOW! Three? This is the kind of gear that you know instantly they are for life. I felt the same way with my Fisher 500B and have held onto it and will never let it go, something to pass down to family. Compared to the 252? Well the woofer control on the 252 was very impressive but the 60's are the kind of tube gear that make you wonder why you would ever want SS gear. The mids are TO DIE FOR! The highs/mids have that holographic sound that makes you come back for more like a drug. I still plan on bi-amping my Bozaks with the active crossover once it arrive...2105 on woofer/mc60's on the top. I have a strange gut feeling that I might not need to biamp and the 60's will give a more cohesive sound but as this hobby as proven again and again, you just never know. Crestwood, set a date, send the kids away, whatever it take, lets make it happen.
 
A 12AX7 and a 12AU7 are totally different tubes, despite the identical pinouts. That is one tube substitution which I would never make.

You might want to try a 5751 in the 12AX7 position though. Those can sound really sweet as a 12AX7 substitution.
 
Hindsight is always 20/20 . . . if only I had kept ONE pair of them! I think part of the allure of the MC60s is that they're absolutely all tube, including the rectifiers. Two of the three pair I had were modded to run 5AR4s for rectifiers. Those things sounded SWEET!

I sold them 15 years ago for top money . . . which is about half of what they go for today. Stupid.
 
Damacman, you switched over to all SS or are you still tubing it? I think these 60's have real balls in the bass department....totally surprised...listening to Jim James solo album, I mean the depth in the sound stage is soooo deep! How do these compare to other McIntosh tube amps? Different than the 275's? Heard the MC30's are great as well. The wife is getting me preamp tubes for my Juicy Blueberry for my upcoming b-day in Feb....I'm sure that will be a sweet little upgrade! Getting them from Bryce youngman. Still gotta sell my Kef 107's before she kills me cause this weekend I'm picking up a mint pair of W90's for a good price :) Such a problem.
 
I had to bring one of my 60s in for a quick repair last week and decided to try an older SS Yamaha amp I had.....wow, no contest! The Macs are soo sweet.

At the time I owned the MC60s, I was living in a different house and had an office system that had amps in constant rotation. Honestly, I think the MC60s gave me more enjoyment than any other amplifier I tried in that setting. Part of the enjoyment is all the tube glow that you get with the lights off.

For now, I'm all solid state (couple of MC2300s, MC2105, etc.). I do have an MC225 still but it's mothballed for the time being.
