mc2105 repair question

I purchased mcintosh mc2105 from E bay as excellent condition. After enjoying 1 month, The right side sound doesn't work completely by sudden. Meter gain shows that signal is receiving. Anybody can help me for this matter, since one side is dead completely dead, which might mean that a simple replacement and repair will fix this problem. I am using with C-28 as a pre-amp.

Could be dirty switches or pots, defective capacitors, bad transistors or any or all of the above. Get it to Terry in Knoxville and when it comes back it can be like new. Best deal in McIntosh repair. Have you seen some of the items he has rebuilt?

You might even be able to pony express it to him to avoid shipping.
 
I'm not at all familiar with McIntosh, but there might be a blown fuse somewhere if you said it was sudden.

It sounds absurd, but I try to fix it by myself. I am not an expert in Mcintosh, but am pretty good in fixing electronics, possessing electrical license. Sending to Mc. expert as you suggest, is last solution for this matter, If anyone has experienced similar symptom with other Mcintosh amp, It will be greatly appreciated.
 
I guess that it might be a blown fuse and checked a main fuse on rear which is OK. Is anyone knows that there is an internal fuse in Mcintosh 2105 or similar amp?

No, likely could be that the speaker switch is dirty and requires a dose of DeoxIT and work it back and forth, but it could also be the slider switch at the back of the amp (set it to Normal)...spray that lightly into the switch at the exterior and better at the interior and work that too. Also, same for the front panel gain controls. Probably not a fuse if the meters are both working.

Oh, I speak from experience on this as the exact same thing happened to me a year ago and I managed to fix the problem...also I sent the amp to Terry DeWick in Tennessee and he performed an "audio path upgrade" on the amp (general check-up, cleaning, relamping, changing capacitors and out of rating resistors in the audio path).

DeoxIT D5 is an electric contact cleaner. Corrosion forms over time in all of the switches. Apply the D5 and work the switches back and forth for a minute or so--more than once--just need a little spritz each time.

I even pulled the amp boards (between the heat sinks) after figuring out how to remove the threaded connectors (very tricky finger work :naughty: ). The amp boards slide out of connectors (kind of like computer boards) and then the contacts (male and female) can be cleaned too. It took a few tries for me to get everything all cleaned, but it has been working ever since.

It COULD be something else, but that's the easiest place to start.

deoxIT works

After your suggestion, I went to Radio shack and bought DeoxIT, since I couldn't wait a couple of days for a :drool:mail order product and I was very disappointed by not-functioning Mcintosh amp. I was not expecting more than "Nothing to loose, at least cleaning for valuable amp". I dropped a couple of drops and move back and forth for all switches including meter gains. A miracle happens! It works!! perfect !!!! Thanks a lot for your support.:music:
