MC2105 restore from a shipping disaster

Just starting my journey restoring a MC2105 that was beat to crap on shipping. I ended up getting a refund and get to keep the amp but it needs some love. Starting a thread of the journey and all the issues that I have along the way.

Assess the damage
The first step was taking out all the glass and thankfully the plexiglass survived with a few cracks. After I got the plexiglass off the amp I found that the knobs were not where they were supposed to be and the actual metal under the glass was also pretty dinged up. I then took a look at the two pots that taken the most damage (assuming this from the fact that the metal near them were warped. The two effected pots were the speaker switch and the left gain knob. The speaker switch seemed to operate just fine so didn't dive into that one. The left gain knob though was exploded from the back so I decided to take it apart to make sure the wafer survived. While the wafer survived the threading on the knob and the actual plastic piece that holds the rod were cracked making the rod unstable and wobbles a lot allowing you to even "wobble" your way to the other side of the pot bypassing the stop. So the pot will need to be fixed up, that will be later tho. I pulled the rest of the front off to find that I lost a few bulbs also in the bouncy journey to my house. Other then that nothing else seems to be damaged, so time to fix it up to see if the amp will turn on. I do see a bit of corrosion from the big caps but we will get to that later.

Repairing the damage
After pulling the entire front metal panel off the amp I was able to see the damage of the metal sheet which was pretty bad. I was able to find some wood in my garage and carefully reshape the metal back as flat as possible. I had to do this otherwise the knobs wouldn't mount properly and fit whenever I replace the glass. After a lot of banging around in the garage the metal sheet seems to be flat as I will get it for now. I then took some Locktite super glue to the cracked pot to stabilize the rod enough to be used (it still wobbles and I will be looking at doing a replacement if everything else in the system works). I had buy a die to re-thread the pot so I could reattach it to the front of the metal front, thankfully this just needed a bit of muscle to it done.

Power on test
After finally mounting everything back to a straight enough metal sheet I finally did a power on test. I did confirm that the knobs/meters seem to be working but the output to the speakers was a bit lacking so def need to spend the time to recap and go through all the components to validate they are working. This is what I am working through now.

Re-cap (just the start)
I have ordered some new high filter caps. Everyone suggested from AudioKarma either the E36D750CPN393QEB7M or 36DY393F075DL2B which sadly both or no longer being sold. So I found a replacement that just seems like the newer version which is a E36D750HPN393TE92U. So I have on order a full recap for the high filter caps, the two output boards, the can caps from Hayseed Hamfest (showing some leaks there), and also looking at doing the thermal upgrade from the service bulletin.

Next steps
In the meantime, if anyone that has replaced the gain pots on a MC2105 (or similar amp) have any recommendations for pots to get that would be great. I have heard I most likely will have to mod my knobs to fit new pots and I can't seem to find in any of the spec sheets what the pots range is.
Also I am looking to see if anyone has done the service upgrade where they are missing C117 & C118, I am making sure I don't need to add in the C117/118 or the values need to be different or I need to replace a cap somewhere else in the amp.

Going to be putting a lot of love into this amp, should be a journey. Cheers:beerchug:

We have sound
My two E36D750HPN393TE92U showed up today, and slotted them in after cleaning off the chrome top from the leakage and my outputs on my channel now seem to be working well. Tomorrow I will hook it up to my scope to see how the circuit is running.

Case of the broken pot
I did some more research on the broken pot and found it is a 250k and ran into a post talking about just replacing the wafer. Which got me thinking of replacing the shaft instead. I found what seems to be a very similar shaft (dimensions seem to match) https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/potentiometer-audio-d-shaft-16mm-snap-bracket on this pot. So I ordered one to see if I can pull the shaft out (granted it has the right pieces inside to fit the other pot).

I have read that I could also replace the pot by calling McIntosh but I also heard the quality is very lacking so if I go down that route and pay $100 for a pot I might just look at a different solution.

 
I think that the lacking quality rumor might relate more to the 2-channel pots not tracking the L&R channels together well, not actually a quality problem but maybe there’s something that I haven’t heard/read yet.

For a single-channel pot I would not be hesitant to buy from McIntosh Parts (such as the 2105 pots).
 
Re-capping
So just tried to do the service bulletin for the MC2105 and re-cap the left channel.

Before:

There seems to be an issue with this recap/service bulletin or I am missing something. My right channel still works fine but my left channel now sounds like it is severely distorted.

Trying to figure out where I messed up. If anyone sees something I placed wrong please let me know. Going to be going over this with a fine tooth comb.
 
Hooked it up to the oscilloscope after swapping the left and right channel to make sure it was unique to that board (spoiler it is unique to the new board).

Here are the two channels next to each other:

My first guess is probably one of the two caps I replaced that aren't apart of the service bulletin. So going back to the original caps there and see if that fixes it.
 
Welp, I confirmed it is an issue with the service bulletin and not my replacement caps.

Parts I used to fulfill the service bulletin on the left channel
1 x 2N5320 - Replaces Part 132-053 in the bulletin which replaces the transistor 132-038
1 x 2N5322 - Replaces Part 132-054 in the bulletin which replaces the transistor 133-039
1 x 680pf disc cap - Replaces C115 (note: 117 doesn't exist on my board).
1 x 22 AWG wire - To wire the two heat sink pads.
Deleted C123 which was a 220pF Cap.

Only thing I can think that I might need to do is to add in C117, but I am hesitant to do that as in the newer serial numbers they purposely removed C117.

All the voltages seem to match what the service manual says (with in a degree).

At a glance I'm not seeing the jumpers by the transistors that are supposed to have the heat sinks?

Here are my redone MC2105 boards next to brand new ones from McIntosh. I was just eyeballing against yours and noticed you don't have the jumpers.

On your brand new ones did you have C117 or have two 680pf disc caps near your heatsink. I am really curious to try out adding the second 680pf cap.

You might double-check that you got the polarity correct on the installation of the new caps. Maybe??
 
Decided to hook up my scope to the diodes emitters to see if anything between the right and left were different.

The 5N322 and the 132-039 seem to be outputting the same signal (measure at the emitter of both transistors)

But the 5N320 seems to be jumping around while the 132-038 is smooth. See attached videos. My guess is either it is a bad transistor or something else is burnt out on that section

On your brand new ones did you have C117 or have two 680pf disc caps near your heatsink. I am really curious to try out adding the second 680pf cap.

New ones have C115 and C117 in place. Unsure what values they are but they are not ceramic I don't think (they are small and blue).
 
Replaced the transistor 5320 with my other one that I had for the right channel and same issue. Going to try to add in C117.

Added in c117 and it didn't do anything. So back to the drawing board.

Might have to just make a call to McIntosh tomorrow to see if there is anything wonky with my serial number for the service bulletin.

I'm trying to compare yours to mine by eye, it's tough because your PCB traces are different. So maybe it is a serial number thing?

(I'm eyeballing against my new ones, the ones that I serviced already are in my MC2105 which is playing now so can't inspect them unfortunately; I'm using the pic I have of them above as well as the MC2105 SM. The service manual is confusing because I can't tell how the collectors of 132-038 & -039 are connected to anything.)

Yeah been playing the trace game myself. My guess is something to do with the c117 missing and the resistor value needs to be different. I think I need to talk to McIntosh
 
The plot thickens. Dropped in the old 22ohm resistor that was supposed to be replaced with the 18ohm resistor and now I have no more weird wave. Bit of noise but assuming that is due to the old caps I put back in.

So I will for sure be making a call to McIntosh since I don't think that is intended behavior :wtf:

For reference the 22ohm resistor measured around 24 ohms and the 18 measured 17.6 ohms.
 
So going to for a 9 ohm resistor to see if that helps Didn't help out. I am stuck probably until Monday to see if I can get on the phone with someone.
