I have a non-working MC225 that I was thinking of getting running again, but I don't have a preamp on hand to use with it.

My question is, can use my CD player with the MC225 and use the gain controls as volume, with no preamp in the mix? (output on my CDP is 2.3V) :scratch2:

I had a MC2105 some time ago and remember there being no sound from the speakers when the gain was all the way down, but I had a C29 in the mix then. Will the MC225 act the same way with just my CD player or will there be some sound even at lowest gain setting? It shows they both have the same minimum input sensitivity of 0.5V.

Yeah, I figured I'd start at zero first...but wasn;t sure if it would be completely silent at that spot or if a little music would come through.

I'll test it with a song that ramps up the volume slowly, so I don't freak the dogs out. :D
 
If the resistive track of the potentiometer goes all the way to "zero" the input should be more our less grounded, the signal thus fully attenuated - no sound.

The gain of the circuit is always the same relative amount, the pot just attenuates the input signal.
It should work plenty fine without a preamp. Keep the interconnections as short as possible, if possible.
 
I have some 0.5m Kimber Hero's and 1m Soundstring Omega's (shielded). I'll try both and see what sounds best.

I have to order parts and get it running again asap.

Well, I just did some horse tradin' with Rex Everything, who originally found this amp (original thread here: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=381639 ). I'm not sure if I want to send it out and wait or have Rex do the work after I order the parts.

It's got the usual rust...mostly on the edges where the chrome bends; minor lettering missing; no dents or scratches.

Here's two recent photos I took with my little pocket sized video camera (don't have a real camera right now)...

Looks like a nice one. I bought a 225 last weekend and don't even have it home yet. Ready to do some listening. :)
 
Volume controls will go down to zero. Depending on the source, however, you may find a preamp to be helpful. This may not be as important as with a CD player, however.

Recommendation: If its all original inside, have the work done first. You'll not really know what this amp can do without it.

Nice amp! What does it look like on the inside?

I've attached the service and user's manual in case you haven't found them yet. The resistance measurements in the service manual are easy and safe to do and should give you an idea of how well the circuitry has aged.
