Mc2300, preamp

It's as good as anything Mcintosh made at the time, and your observations are spot-on. But, as you recognize, anyone who bought the '31 over the '34v bought specifically for the remote volume feature.

If I could actually remember any conversations with folks I sold a '31 to, I'd bet they'd have mentioned that they'd have bought a C-34v if it had a remote volume control. The first gen remote volume control units came out before servo controlled devices were commonly available.

To be honest, I've got a C-34V and would like a remote VC myself. Thought about getting a broomstick with a suction cup on the end.

Barring the broomstick, a CR7 is the ideal solution. :)

I actually want a remote volume control as I often have to adjust volume as diff CDs have diff levels. I don’t care about the clicking as I won’t heR it and as long as it’s sonically good and reliable that’s good. I run a tuner, two cd’s a phono, and from time to time a reel to reel to record Saturday Met opera for my girlfriend but most often tape deck is hooked to another set up in diff rms.
Curious about which impedance tap to use? Dq10’s are 8 ohms and each dq1 8 ohms, 8+8 =16? Why would I use a 4 ohm tap? Thx
I haven't noticed any clicking from mine, but I don't know if they all do that or if only some do.

I’m still reading mac2300 manual on impedance.the way it reads if I attach two 8 ohm speaker to a single left or right tab I should use the 16 tab?

If you’re connecting a single 8 Ohm speaker to the terminal, go common and 8 Ohm

If you’re connecting two 8 Ohm speakers to the same terminal in parallel (both negative speaker wires together, both positive speaker wires together), the effective impedance is 4 Ohms, connect to Common and 4 ohm.

I explained this in Reply #20.

The COMBINED LOAD of TWO 8 ohm speakers connected in parallel results in 4 ohm - not 16! .This cannot be any plainer. The connections of both speakers should therefore be made at the terminals labeled "COM" and "4" for each channel.

Sorry guys but if we talk about MC 2300 we talk about amplifier
If we talk about C 2300 We talk about pre-amplifier

With MCINTOSH all references starting with MC are amplifiers !
all references starting with C are preamplifiers !

So why don't you change the title because it is confusing

I just did a bit of rework on a C29, there's another thread that I just posted a picture in. I thought it was a nice little preamp and quite a lot of functionality and tweakability built in if you like the sort of thing. It sounded good with my listening setup.

I have used three different McIntosh preamps with my MC2300s; the MX110z, C33 and C200.

The C200 was/is my favorite, followed by the C33, then MX110z. All were great, just varying levels of greatness.

Hi Patrice,
I think the title is OK (maybe should read "Which preamp for MC2300?") as the OP is asking about a good preamp to use with his MC2300 amp.

FWIW, Of the 4 Mc. preamps I own, the 6 yr. old C 220 is the one that sounds the best to my ears, currently driving 2 MC 1201 mono block power amps in my bedroom`s system`s XRT 18 speakers that are supplemented with 2 Velodyne ULD 15 400 watt servo powered subwoofers.
This system is powered up every morning & and runs for hours, & has only had a tube replaced after 1000`s of hrs. accumulated of daily use in 2018 when the cheesy factory Chinese 12AX7 tube`s filament opened up one morning, a quick replacement with a NOS RCA 12AX7, and I was back in business, & at that time I decided to pull the never to be used by me phono preamp`s 12AX7, even though I disabled it in the C220`s setup menu..
The Mc. preamp that the C220 replaced in that system was my C 31V that I bought new in 1987, and was used every day in other systems here before it was used in my bedroom`s system in 1995, & is still used in this spare bedroom`s system driving a Crown DC 300 II, with only the light box/LED conversion needing to be addressed since purchase..

And while the C 31V has the 5 band EQ flexibility that the C220 didn`t, in my bedroom`s setup, it wasn`t needed, as I had carefully 31 octave voiced/smoothed that system decades back with my RTA to a resolution of nearly 2 db. flatness.

I can`t comment on any of these Mc preamp`s phono stage`s performance, as I had to give up on the use of TT`s starting in late Nov. 1981, and all of them only see line level use in the systems their used in.

JMHE with these Mc. preamps.

Ciao

I am also very happy with my C220 that I bought new in 2007. Upon arrival, I replaced the stock tubes with Telefunken tubes including a pair hand picked for low noise for the phono section. It's been running perfectly with those since 2007. Although I don't run it as much as Bill F. relates in the post above, I do use the phono and line sections frequently. I've seen complaints (actually just one person) on this forum about the C220 producing too much sibilance but I disagree with that. I do hear sibilance frequently but it is always associated with specific records and specific tracks and I hear it the same way on the C22 and C47 on the same tracks in the same places. I've never heard the C220 add sibilance on its own - i.e. that is not in the recording.

The C47 is a bit sweeter and more refined and a bit quieter than the C220 but when listening to the C220, I'm always happy and never feel like I want to discard it for the C47 or others.

My 2-cents.

Patrice, the OP has a MC2300 power amplifier, he is looking for a Pre-amplifier to go with it.
This is what the title means.

Thx guys. I prefer to use a solid state unit and not tubes. C31v or c35 are on my shorty list as I want a remote volume.

Don't forget the C37 which is the last and best in the series C31/C35/C37. It's main advantage is its rotary volume control instead of pushbutton. C37 is a bit harder to find though.

The C 37 is a very good Mc. preamp IMHO/E, as well Eric.
Mine was gladfully purchased in ~ 96/7, and unexpectedly, when my local B & M A/V store`s owner called me up to offer that Mc. preamp, a tuner, amp, 5 CD turntable player for about 1/3rd their price`s, because some customer had all that Mc. gear on layaway and had been paying on it regularly, but suddenly for over a yr. quit making the scheduled layaway payments, so the store`s owner`s attorney advised him to sell it all the gear, and I bought it..

Anyway, the C 37 was a upgrade to the, at that time in use, A/V rack`s 1986 purchased C 31V that I mentioned above, and is still in use today, with only a LED front panel lighting update, and that C 37 preamp stays powered up 24/7/365 for yrs. doing master audio source selection for my A/V rack`s audio feed to 5 room distribution active stereo audio signal splitter unit..
