MC240 Serial Number Question

I was looking at the Larry Hodson McIntoosh Compendium and noticed there are early, mid, and late MC240 models.

The appearance of my MC240 is consistent with a late MC240 with the fuse on the left of the angled faceplate, the single octal output, and then the speaker connectors in the middle, but I noted my serial number was ###D#, which is consistent with a mid MC240. Also, my tube cage has small squares, which is also consistent with the mid model.

Not sure if this is insignificant, or if it means I have some type of modded or bastardized version of the MC240. I received it as a gift (and a pretty awesome gift at that), so I have zero information about the seller other than he is in New York.

Just looking for some insight, and whether this is something to worry about, or not. I have not opened the amp, that is a little out of my league. Thanks for any input…

There are several more than three versions of the MC240, and I wouldn’t worry about it.

The “late” MC240 didn’t come with a tube cage, you would need to send in the warranty registration card for them to send it to you. Beside that, many people didn’t keep the cage on the amps, so some got lost.

Anyway, some people have bought cages to complete their amplifier, yours likely was purchased to complete the amp.

You most likely have the “late” amp, of which there are a couple of versions. The S/N letter you’re referencing does not mean that your amplifier is not correct. It is HIGHLY unlikely that someone put a V3 chassis together and stamped a V2 S/N on it.

As SaturationPt says, cages went missing and some were replaced with cages from others Non issue.

What is there to worry about here? Does it operate as it should? Maybe you need to send it in and have the serial number tag refurbished
