MC250s as monoblocks

OK....the big brainstorm of my day...

I have an MC250 and I like it so much that I'm thinking of picking up another and using them as monoblocks.

The BIG question for you guys: has anyone on the forum done this and how do they sound in this configuration?

If you say they are terrific then I'll ask about the gyrations to set each one up for mono operation.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Are you trying to solve a problem with a difficult pair of speakers? In 30+ years I have never heard these as mono units only as biamp units.

No...no speaker difficulties.....I have very efficient speakers...

I'm just curious as to the sound of these units as monoblocks.

Buy the cleanest one you can find and do it. It is essentially the same question that has recently been addressed in the thread 'Adding another MC275.'

Depends on your speakers, but what do you have to lose? Buy it and experiment. I have heard many, many amps and have owned many, but the Mc250 has always stayed in the system. Why? Because I think it is much better than the Mc240 and about the same as a Mc275 sound wise.

I would do it because you have little to lose, and in the end will have a setup that will last a lifetime of listening enjoyment with very little cash out. Prices will rise (and are rising) on the Mc250 because people are realizing what a sweet smaller amp it is. Clean ones are getting hard to find, and I know because I have been looking for two years.

Also, I just bought a second Mc250 three weeks ago that I will put together this week (and photos) and tell you what I really think.

Not familiar with how Mc does things, but with most amps when put them in monoblock operation all the noise, distortion, etc. from both channels are combined into one. Whether or not this is the case with Mc, I don't know, and whether or not it's an audible factor depends.

However, it is a considation of potentially why not to do it if you don't really need to.

I'd suggest you wire up the one you have a run in stand alone and see what you think now. That should give you one-ear's full of opinion.

Let us know!

Cheers,

David

OK...I may go mono for an experiment with the one amp I have..

Now, will somebody walk me through that procedure. Please?

Thanks!

I've been running my two as monoblocks through my khorns for about a year now. I have heard many other systems and either my ears aren't good enough or my system sounds pretty darn good. I have a juicy music Peach Pre.

The 250's to me have the perfect sound. I would strongly suggest that you do it.

Count on me to do this test - but just give me a few days. I am pulling the other 250 out today and need some space to do it - my wife is going away this week so I can do a full volume test - plus she doesn't know about the second one :). I'm going to put it through some vintage JBLs (4311, 4430) etc and see how it goes.

CountD....I like the way you think!

Wife's away....blast away!

Have fun with the "phantom" 250 and give us your assessment!

Good news indeed Kuisis....I have a pair of La Scalas and will run the 250s through either a MC220 or an Eastern Electric Minimax pre.......

Time will tell if I go in this direction....

Would someone be kind enough to share with me an understandable diagram on how to set the MC250 up as a mono amp....the owner's manual is useless in this respect...

A diagram I could understand......for 8 ohm speaker

Thanks in advance!
